Searching for words

“Did you hear that?” Lucy whispered, clutching her glass of champagne. Her eyes darted around the reception hall, her heart pounding like a drumbeat. June, standing next to her, paused mid-conversation with one of the guests, her gaze shifting toward Lucy. “What?” The music had suddenly stopped, but only for a split second before it came back on. It was as though a faint growl echoed through the room, but it was quickly drowned out by the chatter of guests and the sound of clinking glasses. “I don’t know,” Lucy muttered, her voice filled with unease. “It felt like... something shifted.” June chuckled lightly, but the look on Lucy’s face made her pause. “Maybe it’s just your nerves. It’s been a long night already, and you’ve been through a lot. A little paranoia is expected.” Lucy forced a smile but didn’t feel reassured. Her eyes kept searching the crowd, not quite sure what she was looking for. The weight in her chest grew heavier with each passing second. Something was wrong, she could feel it deep in her bones. “Are you okay?” June asked, her voice gentle but concerned. “I don’t know,” Lucy confessed. “I just... I keep thinking about Marcel. He’s been gone too long. It’s not like him.” June raised an eyebrow. “Well, you know how he is. Always off handling things in his own way. But hey, you’re married now. You don’t need to worry about his business anymore.” Lucy shook her head, her dark eyes haunted. “I can’t just stop worrying. You didn’t see him earlier, he looked... different. And then that woman showed up.” “His mother?” June said, her voice lowering to a whisper. Lucy nodded. “Yes. She didn’t even congratulate us. Didn’t smile or clap. Just watched him, like... like she was judging him.” “You know she doesn’t approve of the marriage,” June said, her voice firm. “She never has.” “I know,” Lucy sighed, looking at her best friend. “But there’s something more to it. She made it clear. She doesn’t think I’m good enough for him, June.” “Well, that’s not new information, is it?” June shrugged. “Some people are just like that. They don’t see what’s right in front of them.” Before Lucy could respond, the door at the far end of the room opened, and Marcel stepped in, his tall figure cutting through the crowd with ease. But there was something different about him. His jaw was clenched, his eyes were darker than usual, and his movements were tense. Lucy’s breath caught in her throat. “There he is.” June looked up, but her expression quickly shifted from curiosity to concern. “Something’s wrong.” Marcel’s gaze swept over the room, and for a brief moment, their eyes met. Lucy felt a chill run down her spine, as though he were trying to communicate something without speaking a word. His eyes were haunted, and there was a flicker of something primal in them, something wild and untamed. “Lucy.” His voice was strained as he made his way toward her. “We need to talk.” She stood frozen for a second before quickly making her way toward him, her mind racing. “What’s going on, Marcel? What happened?” “Not here,” he said through gritted teeth. “It’s not safe.” Lucy’s heart began to race. Something was wrong, she could feel it. She glanced over her shoulder at June, who looked back with a worried expression. “Stay here,” Lucy whispered to June, before turning to follow Marcel through the crowd. They made their way to a side door, where a quiet hallway led to the back of the building. As they walked, Lucy’s anxiety grew. The tension in the air was thick, and Marcel’s silence only heightened her unease. Finally, Marcel stopped in front of a small, dimly lit room, his hand resting on the door handle. He looked at Lucy, his eyes dark. “I don’t have much time.” “Marcel,” Lucy said, her voice trembling, “what’s going on? You’re scaring me.” He sighed, glancing at her with a mixture of regret and frustration. “It’s not just the press or my mother. There’s something bigger at play here, something I didn’t anticipate.” “Bigger?” she echoed, her heart skipping a beat. “What do you mean?” Before Marcel could respond, the door to the room swung open, and a man stepped out of the shadows. He was tall, dressed in a dark suit, his expression cold and calculating. He didn’t seem surprised to see them, but the air around him was charged with tension. “You must be Marcel,” the man said, his voice smooth and devoid of emotion. Marcel’s posture stiffened, and his jaw tightened even further. “And you are?” “Let’s just say I’m someone with a vested interest in your future,” the man replied, his eyes flicking to Lucy before returning to Marcel. “And your wife’s.” Lucy’s stomach dropped, a sinking feeling overtaking her. “What do you want?” The man smiled, but it was anything but reassuring. “You’ll find out soon enough.” Marcel stepped in front of Lucy, his hand resting on her shoulder protectively. “Whatever this is, you’ll have to go through me.” The man didn’t flinch. “Oh, I’m counting on it.” Before Lucy could ask any more questions, the man turned and vanished back into the shadows, leaving her standing there, more confused and terrified than ever. “Marcel...” Lucy started, her voice shaking. “What was that about?” Marcel didn’t respond immediately. His face was hard, his expression unreadable. “I can’t explain it all right now. But I need you to stay close. No matter what happens, promise me you won’t leave my side.” “I don’t understand,” she whispered. “What’s going on? Who was that man?” “Someone who wants to take everything from us,” Marcel said, his voice barely a whisper. Lucy’s head spun, the weight of the situation pressing down on her. The man’s cryptic words echoed in her mind, and a new sense of dread took root in her chest. “I’ll protect you,” Marcel added, his voice low but resolute. “No one will hurt you.” Lucy nodded, her mind racing. “I trust you, Marcel. But I need answers. I need to know what’s really going on.” Marcel looked at her with an intensity that made her heart race. “I promise, I’ll tell you everything. But not yet. Not until it’s safe.” Lucy didn’t know whether she could believe him, but she nodded an yway, knowing she had no other choice. Whatever was happening, they were in it together now.
