Confusion Time

1201 Words
“What do you mean, ‘we have to go’?” Lucy asked, her voice laced with a mix of confusion and fear. Marcel didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he looked toward the door where his bodyguard, Viktor, stood, signaling for them to hurry. The urgency in his eyes was unmistakable. He turned back to Lucy, his face hard with determination. “We don’t have time to explain right now,” he said, his tone low, almost too calm. “We need to move, Lucy. Now.” Lucy felt her heart rate spike. Something was wrong. Something was very wrong. Her mind raced, but before she could ask more questions, Marcel grabbed her hand, pulling her towards the door. The panic building in her chest made her feel like she was suffocating, but she trusted him. She had to trust him. “Where are we going?” Lucy whispered, her voice shaky. “What’s happening?” Marcel didn’t answer at first. They moved quickly through the hall, the sound of their footsteps echoing against the marble floor. The distant noise of the reception party and the music seemed to fade as they moved further into the darkened hallways of the venue. “Marcel, please,” Lucy pressed, her grip tightening on his arm. “I need to know what’s going on. You promised me that we’d face this together, but you’re shutting me out. I can’t, ” She stopped herself, taking a deep breath. “I can’t do this without knowing what’s going on.” Marcel’s eyes softened for a fraction of a second, but the moment quickly passed as he continued to walk, pulling her behind him. “I’m not trying to shut you out. I’m trying to keep you safe. That man from earlier, the one who spoke to my father… he wasn’t here just to cause trouble. He’s a message. Someone in my past is back, someone who has the power to destroy everything.” The words hit Lucy like a punch to the gut. “Destroy everything? What do you mean?” He stopped, turning to face her. His eyes were wild with a combination of anger and fear. “There’s a group, Lucy. A secret group that I’ve been trying to escape for years. They don’t just want control, they want power. They believe that the only way to maintain their status is through force, intimidation, and manipulation. And now they’ve decided to come after me. After us.” The realization hit her hard. “And they think they can do that by hurting me?” Marcel didn’t answer immediately. His jaw clenched, and his gaze hardened. “Yes,” he said finally, his voice a mere whisper. “They believe if they take you from me, it will break me. And if they can break me, they’ll have everything they want.” Lucy felt her stomach drop. The weight of his words settled on her like a heavy blanket, suffocating her. She wanted to protest, to demand that he tell her everything, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that they were running out of time. “Then what do we do?” she asked, her voice barely audible. Marcel looked over his shoulder at Viktor, who nodded in return. “We leave. We need to go to a place where they can’t find us, at least not immediately.” Lucy swallowed, trying to steady her breathing. “But what about the wedding? The reception… your family…” “I know,” Marcel cut in, his voice softening, “but there’s no time for that. We can’t stay here. They’ll know exactly where we are. We have to go somewhere safe, somewhere no one will think to look for us.” Lucy nodded, her mind still reeling. “Okay, let’s go. But you need to promise me something, Marcel. You need to promise me that we’re going to get through this. That no matter what happens, we’re going to survive.” Marcel’s face softened for a moment, his gaze meeting hers with a deep, unspoken understanding. “I promise, Lucy. We’ll get through this. I won’t let anything happen to you.” He turned and began to walk again, guiding her through the labyrinth of hallways. The soft click of their footsteps was the only sound in the otherwise silent venue. It felt as if the whole world had stopped, waiting for whatever was about to happen next. As they reached the back exit, Lucy’s mind raced with thoughts of her father, of everything they had left behind. She thought about the promises she had made, the life they had built together. She couldn’t shake the thought of what might happen if they failed. What would become of her and Marcel? Would they both survive this? Or was their fight doomed from the start? Outside, the cold air hit her like a slap to the face. She blinked in surprise, taking in the dark, empty street before her. It was a stark contrast to the warmth and light of the reception hall they had just left behind. Viktor moved quickly, signaling for a black SUV parked nearby. The engine roared to life, and the sleek black car sped toward them. Marcel ushered Lucy into the vehicle, and the door slammed shut behind them. As they pulled away from the venue, Lucy’s eyes flicked back toward the wedding hall. It looked so peaceful, so still. But she knew that peace was an illusion. Everything had changed. And their world, the life they had known, was now in grave danger. “Where are we going?” she asked, her voice trembling. “To the safe house,” Marcel replied, his voice firm. “It’s a place I’ve kept hidden for years. Only a few people know about it.” Lucy nodded, her mind still reeling. She turned to look at Marcel, searching for the man she had married, searching for the man she thought she knew. But the more she looked, the more she realized how much of him had been hidden, locked away in the darkness. And now, as the night unfolded, she felt as though she was seeing him for the first time. Not the man she had married, but the man who had lived a life filled with shadows, danger, and a past he could never escape. The city passed by in a blur as the car sped through the streets, but Lucy didn’t notice. Her thoughts were consumed by the conversation they had just shared, by the revelation that everything she thought she understood about Marcel was only a small part of the bigger picture. The truth was far more complicated, and she had no idea what they were about to face. Marcel reached over and took her hand in his, squeezing it gently. “Stay with me,” he said quietly. “We’ll get through this. I won’t let anything happen to you.” Lucy didn’t know if she believed him completely, but she nodded anyway. For now, that was all she could do. Stay with him. Trust him. And hope that together, they could survive whatever darkness was about to swallow them whole.
