“Marcel, tell me this isn’t happening,” Lucy’s voice broke the heavy silence that had fallen between them. She was pacing the room now, her mind spinning as the weight of Annie’s words sank in deeper with each passing second.
Marcel stood by the window, staring out at the darkened city below, his back straight, his face a mask of composure. But Lucy could tell, even from behind, that he was struggling to maintain his calm. She could feel the tension radiating off him like a storm waiting to break.
“I wish I could, Lucy,” he finally said, his voice tight, filled with the kind of raw emotion that he rarely allowed to show. “I really do. But everything she said… it’s true.”
Lucy froze mid-step, her chest tightening. She knew something was wrong, had known it ever since they had first met. But she hadn’t expected this, not like this. “What do you mean ‘true’? What’s true?” Her words were coming out faster now, fueled by a mix of fear and disbelief.
He turned slowly to face her, and when their eyes met, she saw something she hadn’t expected, a look of regret. “I didn’t want you to know this, Lucy. I didn’t want to drag you into this world. I promised myself that I would protect you from it. But there’s no avoiding it now.”
Lucy’s heart raced. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to hear the truth or if she was terrified of it. But she couldn’t back away now. Not after everything they had been through, not after everything that had brought them to this point.
“What is it, Marcel? What don’t you want me to know?”
He ran a hand through his hair, his frustration evident, before he finally spoke. “I’m not just some CEO, Lucy. I’m not just a businessman. My blood, my heritage, runs much deeper than that.” He paused, collecting his thoughts before continuing. “My family is tied to something far older, something darker than you can imagine. A legacy that I can’t escape.”
Lucy’s breath caught in her throat. She had always known there was something different about Marcel, something mysterious that had drawn her to him from the start. But this? This was something beyond what she had imagined. “What are you saying?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
“I’m not human,” Marcel admitted, his gaze steady but filled with the weight of his words. “I’m part of something… supernatural. Something ancient.” He let the silence hang in the air, allowing the gravity of his confession to settle. “I’m a wolf, Lucy. An Alpha.”
The room seemed to tilt on its axis as the truth hit her like a freight train. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. She wanted to ask him to take it back, to tell her it was a joke, that it wasn’t real. But deep down, she knew it wasn’t. She could see it in his eyes, the depth of pain and fear that he’d been carrying all this time. He was telling her the truth, whether she was ready for it or not.
“A wolf?” she finally managed to say, her voice thick with confusion. “You’re… you’re telling me that you’re not human? That you’re some kind of… animal?”
Marcel’s face softened, and he stepped toward her slowly, closing the distance between them. “It’s not that simple. Yes, I can shift into a wolf, but it’s not just about that. It’s a part of who I am, who my family is. I didn’t ask for this. I didn’t choose it. But it’s my reality, Lucy. And I’ve tried to keep you out of it. I’ve tried to keep you safe.”
Lucy’s mind was racing, trying to process what he had just revealed to her. She had always felt that there was something more to Marcel, something hidden beneath the surface. But she hadn’t expected this. Wolves? Supernatural legacies? It sounded like something out of a fantasy novel, not her life. But as she looked into his eyes, she knew that this was real. And it terrified her.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” she asked, her voice a mix of hurt and confusion. “Why keep this from me? If we’re going to have a life together, don’t I deserve to know the truth?”
“I didn’t want to put you in danger,” Marcel replied, his voice tight. “There are things in my world that are beyond our control. Things that can’t be undone. I thought if I kept you in the dark, if I kept you away from this, you’d be safe. I was trying to protect you, Lucy.”
Lucy shook her head, the hurt and confusion swirling in her chest. “You think I’m safer not knowing? You think that keeping me in the dark would protect me?” Her voice cracked with emotion. “You’re wrong, Marcel. If we’re going to have a future together, we need to face everything. All of it. I need to know what I’m getting into.”
Marcel stepped closer, reaching for her hand, but she pulled away, unable to let him in. Not yet. Not after what he had just told her. “I’m sorry,” he whispered, his voice filled with regret. “I should’ve told you sooner. But I didn’t want to drag you into this world. I didn’t want to ruin the life we could have had.”
The silence that followed felt suffocating. Neither of them spoke for a moment, both lost in their own thoughts. Lucy wanted to understand. She wanted to wrap her mind around everything Marcel had just told her, but she couldn’t. She was too overwhelmed. The life she thought they were building together suddenly seemed so far out of reach.
“I don’t know what to say,” Lucy finally whispered, her voice raw with emotion. “I don’t know how to process this. I thought we were building something real, Marcel. Something human. But now… now it feels like everything’s falling apart.”
Marcel’s heart ached as he watched her struggle. He had never meant for her to feel like this, to question everything they had fought for. But now that the truth was out, there was no going back. He could only hope that she would see beyond the fear and confusion, that she would understand why he had kept this from her.
“I never wanted to hurt you,” he said softly. “I never wanted you to feel like this.”
Lucy looked up at him, her eyes filled with tears. “Then why did you wait so long to tell me? Why didn’t you trust me enough to be honest?”
Marcel’s chest tightened at the question, and for the first time, he felt the full weight of his actions. “Because I was afraid,” he admitted, his voice barely audible. “Afraid that you would leave me. Afraid that you wouldn’t be able to accept me for what I am.”
Lucy’s gaze softened slightly as she stepped closer, her heart aching for him. She could see the vulnerability in his eyes, the fear that he had been hiding all along. But she also knew that she couldn’t make any decisions yet. Not until she fully understood what was happening. What this meant for them, for their future.
“I don’t know what to think right now, Marcel,” she whispered. “I need time to process this. I need time to figure out what this all means.”
Marcel nodded, his face filled with understanding. “Take all the time you need, Lucy. I’ll be here. I won’t leave you. I promise.”
As the words hung in the air, Lucy felt a strange mix of fear and relief wash over her. She didn’t have all the answers, and she wasn’t sure where this was all headed. But one thing was clear, her life with Marcel would never be the same again.
