Chapter 2 Tokyo Modern Takeshi has apparently been sneaking a look at these notes when I’m not around. At the weekend, I was just about to go over to my nephew’s for dinner when the boy grinned and said, ‘Nan, you really shouldn’t romanticize the past, you know.’ When I didn’t say anything, he went on, ‘Nobody’ll believe you when you say things like being a maid was equivalent to going to a women’s college.’ I don’t recall having written anything about serving as a maid being the same as women’s college. Apart from anything, I have no idea what was taught at such institutions, or anything else about them. What I wrote was that a maid’s job was an apprenticeship for brides. I’m sure Takeshi, brat that he is, looks down on me for my lack of schooling. I only completed ordinary elementary
