She was speechless when she saw the black smoke left by artillery from the antiaircraft guns. ‘Oh! I wonder if Kyo’s school is okay?’ I rushed to turn the radio on, but it didn’t make the situation any clearer. Having seen the American planes flying so low put me on edge. A neighbour came out of her house and told us that there was an air raid warning in place. Even that felt surreal, and I couldn’t quite grasp what she meant. ‘Really, is Kyo’s school okay, I wonder?’ the Mistress repeated. I told her I would go to check and went out, but when I reached the station I found the trains weren’t running.
