The Night Awakens

~ Elena’s POV ~ The forest had never felt this alive before. Every step I took along the narrow path behind the cabin, I could feel it—the air humming, the ground vibrating faintly beneath my feet, like the world itself was aware of me. Watching me. Waiting. I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to steady my breathing. Sleep had been impossible after the attack. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Luna Seraphina’s cold smile, heard her voice echoing in my mind. “You should be afraid, little human.” But fear wasn’t the only thing inside me anymore. There was something else. Something stronger. Power. It pulsed beneath my skin, restless, demanding release. I stepped into a small clearing, the moonlight spilling over the ground like silver fire. The trees stood tall and silent, forming a circle around me. It felt… intentional. Like this place had been waiting for me. “Good,” a voice said softly behind me. I didn’t jump this time. “Darius Vincent Bloodthorn,” I said quietly, turning to face him. “You’ve been following me.” A faint smirk tugged at his lips. “Observing. There’s a difference.” I rolled my eyes slightly, but my chest tightened. “I couldn’t sleep.” “I didn’t expect you to,” he replied, stepping closer. His gaze softened, but there was something serious beneath it. “After what happened… your power is unstable. Tonight, we train again.” I hesitated. “Now?” “Yes. Especially now.” The bond pulsed at his words. Not just from him… But from somewhere deeper in the forest. My breath caught. Kael. I could feel him. Not physically—not yet—but his presence pressed against my senses like a storm waiting to break. My heart began to race, my body reacting before my mind could catch up. Darius noticed immediately. His expression darkened slightly. “He’s close, isn’t he?” I nodded slowly. “I can feel him…” “Good,” Darius said, his voice calm but edged. “Then this lesson is even more important.” He guided me to the center of the clearing. “Close your eyes,” he instructed. I did. “Feel the bond. Not just Kael… but yourself. Your power doesn’t belong to him. It doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to you, Elena Rose Carter.” His words settled deep inside me. For the first time… I believed it. I focused inward. The bond was there—burning, alive, connecting me to Kael Alexander Nightshade like an invisible thread. It pulsed with his emotions—anger, frustration, something darker… something possessive. But beneath that… There was something else. A second energy. Mine. Stronger than I had ever realized. “Now release it,” Darius said softly. My eyes snapped open. “Release it? What if I lose control again?” “Then I’ll stop you,” he said simply. I hesitated only for a second before lifting my hands. The energy responded instantly, glowing brighter than before, wrapping around my fingers like living light. It didn’t feel chaotic this time. It felt… controlled. “Good,” Darius murmured. “Now shape it.” “Shape it?” “Yes. Don’t just release power—control it. Bend it to your will.” I swallowed hard, focusing harder. The energy flickered, unstable at first, then slowly began to shift. It stretched outward, forming a thin barrier around me, shimmering softly under the moonlight. My breath caught. “I’m doing it…” Darius’s eyes gleamed with approval. “Yes… you are.” But before I could feel proud— A growl cut through the air. Low. Dangerous. Familiar. My heart stopped. Kael Alexander Nightshade stepped into the clearing. The air changed instantly. He didn’t rush forward this time. He didn’t shout. He just stood there… watching. His silver eyes locked onto mine, glowing faintly, filled with something I couldn’t fully understand. But I felt it. The bond exploded to life. Stronger than ever. My barrier flickered violently, reacting to his presence. My chest burned, my knees weakening as the connection pulled at me—harder, deeper, impossible to ignore. “Elena Rose Carter…” he said slowly. My name sounded different on his lips tonight. Not cold. Not rejecting. But heavy. Meaningful. “You shouldn’t be here,” Darius said sharply, stepping slightly in front of me. Kael’s gaze flicked to him, and the temperature seemed to drop. “I go wherever I want,” Kael replied calmly. Too calmly. That scared me more than his anger ever had. His eyes returned to me. “You’re getting stronger.” It wasn’t a question. I swallowed. “I have to.” “For what?” he asked, taking a step closer. The bond tightened instantly. “For myself,” I said, my voice shaking but firm. Something flickered in his expression. Approval? No… Pride. And that scared me even more. “You’re playing a dangerous game,” Kael said, his voice low, controlled. “Training with him… pushing your power…” “I don’t have a choice,” I shot back. “You rejected me, remember?” Silence fell. Heavy. Sharp. His jaw tightened. His eyes darkened. The bond pulsed painfully. “I remember,” he said quietly. And for the first time… He didn’t sound proud of it. Darius stepped forward. “Then stay out of her way. She doesn’t need your interference.” Kael’s gaze snapped to him. “And you,” he said coldly, “need to remember your place, Darius Vincent Bloodthorn.” The tension between them was instant. Explosive. My power reacted again, flaring uncontrollably as their emotions clashed. The barrier shattered, energy bursting outward in a wave that shook the clearing. I gasped, dropping to my knees. “Focus!” Darius said quickly, grabbing my arm. But it was too late. The bond had taken over. Kael moved before I could react. In a second, he was in front of me—close, too close. His hand gripped my chin, lifting my face to meet his eyes. The world disappeared. All I could see… Was him. “All this power…” he murmured, his voice rough, almost strained. “And you still think you can handle it alone?” My breath hitched. “I’m not alone,” I whispered. His grip tightened slightly. “You should be,” he said softly. The words didn’t make sense. But the way he said them… Made my heart race. “Let her go.” Darius’s voice cut through the moment like a blade. Kael didn’t move. Didn’t look away. Didn’t release me. For a second… I thought he wouldn’t. Then slowly… Reluctantly… He let go. But the bond didn’t. I stayed frozen, heart racing, chest rising and falling rapidly as both Alphas stood on either side of me. The forest was silent again. Watching. Waiting. And I realized something terrifying: This wasn’t just about power anymore. It wasn’t just about survival. It was about control. Desire. And a bond that refused to break… no matter how hard it was rejected.
