~ Elena’s POV ~
The forest was eerily quiet, but for the first time in days, I felt… safe. Sort of.
Darius Vincent Bloodthorn had escorted me to a secluded cabin deep in the woods, far from the pack’s judgmental eyes. His presence was both intimidating and strangely comforting. I could feel his power radiating in waves, but unlike Kael… it wasn’t suffocating.
“You need to learn control,” Darius said, pacing slowly. His piercing blue eyes never left me. “You feel it, don’t you? That bond… the connection with Kael?”
I flinched. “I… I don’t understand it. How can a wolf… or a man… feel like this?”
He stopped and leaned closer, lowering his voice. “It’s not just a feeling. It’s power. And you… Elena Rose Carter… have it too. Stronger than you know.”
My heart skipped. Power? Me?
He raised his hand, and a faint glow appeared around my palm. I gasped as warmth surged through me. It wasn’t magic I recognized—it was… me. Something inside that had been dormant, waiting.
“You’re stronger than you realize,” Darius said softly. “And Kael… he doesn’t know it yet. That’s why he rejected you. He’s afraid of what he can’t control.”
My pulse quickened. Afraid… or jealous?
A rustle in the shadows made me spin around. Kael. Of course. Always lurking, always watching. His silver eyes burned into mine from the edge of the clearing.
I wanted to run, scream, cry… do anything but face him. But even as fear threatened to take over, the bond pulsed inside me, louder than ever, connecting us.
Kael’s jaw tightened, and I could feel the wolf in him growling.
Mine.
I swallowed hard, heart pounding, realizing that no matter how much he tried to push me away… he couldn’t. And somehow, neither could I.
Darius noticed Kael first. “Looks like someone isn’t happy to see me here,” he said, voice low and dangerous.
Kael stepped out from the shadows, towering over both of us. “Elena Rose Carter… step away from him,” he said, voice icy, controlled—but his wolf was screaming. His eyes flicked to mine, full of unspoken anger and desire.
“I’m not stepping away from anyone,” I said, surprising even myself. “Not from him. Not from you.”
The forest seemed to hold its breath. The tension between us was palpable, sharp as the edge of a blade.
Kael growled low, dangerous, almost… pleading. “You don’t understand what you’re doing… staying here with him.”
“I do understand,” I whispered, voice shaking, heart hammering. “I understand more than you think, Kael Alexander Nightshade. And I’m not afraid.”
