~ Elena’s POV ~
The words still echoed in my ears.
“Kael Alexander Nightshade… I reject this bond. You will not be my mate.”
I stumbled backward, the ground feeling unreal beneath my feet. My heart hammered violently, my chest burning with a mixture of fear, confusion, and heartbreak.
I couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t think. Couldn’t even scream.
All around me, shadows shifted. The pack had arrived. Their eyes were on me—some curious, some judgmental, some openly mocking. I felt the weight of their gazes like a knife pressing against my chest.
Then she stepped forward.
“Seraphina Vale,” Kael’s voice cut through the tension, sharp as steel, “make sure she understands her place.”
Seraphina’s lips curled into a cruel smile. She was tall, elegant, and terrifyingly beautiful, every movement dripping with superiority.
“You’re a human,” she hissed, her eyes flashing. “And humans like you are nothing. Nothing. You’re weak, fragile… not even worthy to be near him, Elena Rose Carter.”
My knees threatened to buckle, but I straightened as much as I could. I will not cry in front of them.
Kael’s gaze didn’t soften. If anything, it burned colder, sharper. I could see the storm behind his silver eyes—anger, frustration, and something I couldn’t name… desire?
“Elena Rose Carter,” he said again, his tone lethal, carrying every ounce of authority he possessed, “leave. You are not my mate. You do not belong here.”
I wanted to speak, to defend myself, to scream that I didn’t understand—but no sound came out. My throat was tight. My hands shook.
The pack whispered behind me, some snickering, others shaking their heads in disapproval.
I turned and fled, my boots scraping against the gravel, the cold forest air biting at my skin. My heart shattered with every step, the pulse of the bond between us screaming in my chest.
He rejected me… but it still connects us.
And deep down, I knew—I wasn’t safe. Not here. Not anywhere.
Because fate had already claimed me… whether he wanted it or not.
