Chapter 5: Forbidden Feelings
Amara couldn’t stop thinking about Kai. Every moment in the mansion, every conversation with her family, felt heavier because she was carrying a secret in her heart. She didn’t know how it had happened so quickly—how someone she barely knew could feel so important—but the more she tried to ignore it, the stronger it grew.
By Saturday, she found herself walking toward the park again, her sneakers clicking on the familiar path. She wasn’t sure why she kept going back, only that something inside her told her she had to.
When she arrived, Kai was already there, sketchbook on his lap, completely absorbed in his work. His head tilted slightly as he noticed her approach.
“Amara,” he said softly, a smile lighting up his face. “You came back.”
She smiled nervously. “I…uh…wanted to see you.”
He gestured to the bench beside him. “Sit. I’ve been waiting for you.”
She sat, feeling a mix of excitement and fear. “You’re always so calm,” she said after a moment, watching him sketch.
Kai shrugged. “I guess I just focus on what I can see, not what I can’t.”
Amara laughed quietly. “I wish I could do that.”
They talked again, about small things at first—the sketches, the city, music. But gradually, the conversation shifted, as if the world around them didn’t exist. Amara felt herself opening up in a way she never had with anyone else. She laughed more freely, shared thoughts she usually kept to herself, and even let him see her vulnerable side.
At one point, Kai looked at her seriously. “Amara…you’re different. You don’t have to hide behind wealth or appearances with me.”
Her heart skipped a beat. “I…don’t usually get that,” she admitted. “Most people see the Alade name first, me second.”
He smiled gently. “I see you first. That’s what matters.”
For a moment, silence fell between them, filled with a tension that neither could ignore. Amara felt a flutter in her chest—a mix of fear and longing. She had never felt this way about anyone before, and yet it felt natural, inevitable.
“I should go soon,” she said reluctantly, standing up.
Kai nodded but didn’t look away. “Yeah… I get it.”
Before she could move farther, he spoke again, softly this time. “Amara…be careful. Not everyone in your world will understand.”
She paused, thinking about her parents, the mansion, and the expectations that had always guided her life. “I know,” she said quietly. “But…sometimes, I have to follow my heart, even if it’s scary.”
Kai smiled, and for a moment, the world felt small and perfect.
Walking home, Amara felt a strange mix of joy and worry. Being with Kai made her feel alive, free, and understood—but it also reminded her how complicated her life really was. She didn’t know what would happen next, or if they could even be together, but she knew one thing: she couldn’t stop thinking about him.
That night, lying in her bed, she stared at the ceiling, her mind replaying every moment with him. The sketches, the laughter, the way he saw her. She felt hope, excitement, and fear all at once.
Amara knew that her life was changing, and that following her heart might come with challenges she wasn’t ready for. But for the first time in a long time, she felt ready to face them.
