Chapter 1: The Deal Begins Amara Alade stood in front of the large mirror in her bedroom, staring at her reflection as if she didn’t recognize the girl looking back at her. Everything about her looked perfect—her neatly styled hair, her simple but expensive outfit, the calm expression she had learned to wear over the years. But inside, nothing felt perfect. Not even close. “Amara!” her mother’s voice echoed from downstairs. “You’re going to be late!” She closed her eyes for a second and took a deep breath. Late for what? Another meeting? Another event? Another decision she didn’t make for herself? “I’m coming,” she replied quietly. Grabbing her bag, she walked out of her room, her heels clicking softly against the marble floors. The house was as beautiful as always—large, silent, and suffocating. Downstairs, her parents were already waiting. Her father sat on the couch, flipping through some documents like always, while her mother stood near the dining table, looking as elegant as ever. “Sit,” her father said without looking up. Amara obeyed, sitting across from him. “There’s something important we need to discuss,” he continued. Her heart sank slightly. It was never good news when her father used that tone. Her mother smiled, but it didn’t feel warm. “You’re not getting any younger, Amara.” Amara frowned. “I’m nineteen, Mum.” “That’s not the point,” her father interrupted. He finally looked at her, his gaze serious. “This is about your future. Our family name. Our reputation.” There it was again—reputation. “I don’t understand,” Amara said slowly. Her father placed the documents on the table and leaned forward. “You are going to enter a contract relationship.” Silence filled the room. Amara blinked, thinking she heard him wrong. “A… what?” “A contract relationship,” her mother repeated calmly. “It’s a simple arrangement. You’ll be in a public relationship with someone we’ve chosen.” Her chest tightened. “You’re joking.” “No,” her father said firmly. “This is not a discussion. It’s already arranged.” Her fingers curled slightly on her lap. “You want me to date someone… for business?” “It’s not dating,” her father corrected. “It’s a partnership. It will strengthen our connections and secure your future.” “My future?” Amara let out a small, disbelieving laugh. “Or yours?” Her mother’s smile faded. “Watch your tone.” Amara stood up suddenly. “No. This is crazy. You can’t just decide who I’m going to be with like I’m some… some deal!” “That’s exactly what this is,” her father said, his voice cold. “A deal.” The word hit her harder than she expected. A deal. Not love. Not choice. Just… a deal. “And if I refuse?” she asked, her voice quieter now. Her father didn’t hesitate. “You won’t.” Amara stared at him, her chest rising and falling quickly. For a moment, she wanted to argue, to fight, to say no and walk away. But she knew her father. This wasn’t something she could easily escape. “Who is he?” she finally asked. Her mother picked up a file and handed it to her. “Ethan Cole.” Amara hesitated before taking it. The name sounded familiar. She opened the file slowly, her eyes landing on a picture. Tall. Sharp features. Dark hair. Cold eyes. He looked… intimidating. “He’s a billionaire,” her father said. “Young, successful, and very influential. This partnership will benefit both families.” Amara swallowed. “And he agreed to this?” “Yes,” her mother replied. “He understands how things work.” Of course he did. Someone like him wouldn’t see this as strange. It was normal in their world—where feelings didn’t matter and everything had a price. “What are the rules?” Amara asked quietly. Her father’s expression softened slightly, as if he was satisfied she was finally cooperating. “You will act as his girlfriend in public. Attend events together. Maintain appearances.” “And in private?” Her mother answered this time. “You live your lives separately. No emotions. No complications.” No emotions. Amara almost laughed. “Don’t fall in love,” her father added coldly. “That’s not part of the agreement.” Amara looked down at the picture again. Ethan Cole. Cold. Distant. Untouchable. Perfect. Because if there was one thing she had learned in this house, it was how to hide her feelings. “Fine,” she said finally. Her parents exchanged a satisfied glance. “The contract will be signed tomorrow,” her father said. “You’ll meet him then.” Amara nodded slowly, even though her heart felt heavy. Tomorrow. Everything would change tomorrow. As she walked back to her room, the silence of the mansion felt louder than ever. She sat on her bed, staring at Ethan’s picture again. “A contract relationship,” she whispered. No love. No feelings. Just a deal. It sounded simple. But deep down, something told her it wouldn’t be. And she had a feeling… This deal was going to change everything.
