631 Words
Chapter 5 — The Heir Maya stared at her mother, unable to understand what she had just heard. Maya: The heir to the Wolf King? Her mother nodded slowly. Mother: Your father was the last Wolf King of Blackwood. Maya's heart began beating faster. Maya: My father? I thought he died before I was born. Mother: That is what I wanted you to believe. Maya looked at Adrian. Maya: You knew about this? Adrian lowered his eyes. Adrian: I knew your father was alive. I didn't know where he was. Maya: Then why didn't you tell me? Adrian: Because your mother asked me to protect you, not reveal everything. Maya looked back at her mother. Maya: Where is my father? Her mother's expression suddenly changed. Mother: I don't know. A howl echoed through the forest. This time, it was much closer. Adrian immediately turned toward the trees. Adrian: We have to leave. Maya: I'm not leaving without answers. Mother: Maya, you need to trust us. Maya: I've trusted everyone my entire life. Look where that got me. Her mother reached for her hand. Mother: I know you're angry. But if you stay here, you may never get the chance to learn the truth. Maya reluctantly followed them. They hurried through the forest until they reached an old stone house hidden behind thick trees. Adrian opened the wooden door. Adrian: We can hide here for now. Maya stepped inside. The house was old, but surprisingly clean. Strange symbols were carved into the walls, and several old books covered the wooden shelves. Maya walked toward one of them. Maya: What are these? Her mother looked at the books. Mother: The history of our family. Maya opened the oldest book. On the first page was a drawing of a massive black wolf with golden eyes. Below it was a name. Lucian Blackwood. Maya stared at the picture. Maya: Who is he? Her mother became silent. Adrian: Your father. Maya's fingers trembled. Maya: That's my father? Mother: Yes. Maya turned the page. There were drawings of wolves, ancient symbols, and descriptions of the Moon Guardian. But one page had been torn out. Maya: Someone removed this page. Her mother looked away. Maya: What was written here? Mother: Something you aren't ready to know. Maya closed the book. Maya: I'm tired of hearing that. Suddenly, the windows shattered. Glass flew across the room. Maya screamed. Several wolves jumped through the broken windows. Adrian transformed instantly and attacked them. Maya's mother grabbed her arm. Mother: Run! Maya: What about Adrian? Mother: He can protect himself. They ran toward the back door. But before Maya could reach it, a tall man appeared in front of them. His eyes were red. Unknown Man: Where do you think you're going, little Guardian? Maya stepped backward. Her mother moved in front of her. Mother: You will not touch my daughter. The man smiled. Unknown Man: Your daughter doesn't belong to you anymore. Maya's mark suddenly began glowing. The man stared at her palm. Unknown Man: The Guardian has awakened. Maya felt a strange power rising inside her. Her eyes began glowing gold. The stranger stepped back. Unknown Man: Impossible. Maya looked at her own hands. She could feel something changing inside her. Then a deep voice echoed through the forest. Unknown Voice: My daughter. Maya froze. Everyone stopped moving. Her mother looked toward the darkness. Mother: No... Maya: Mom, what is it? A massive black wolf stepped out from between the trees. Its golden eyes were fixed on Maya. Maya felt an inexplicable connection to it. The wolf slowly walked toward her. Then it transformed. A tall man stood beneath the moonlight. Maya's heart stopped. She had never seen him before. But somehow, she knew exactly who he was. Father: Maya.
