Reckoning

Victoria awoke with a pounding headache, the sunlight streaming through the curtains stinging her eyes. Last night's events came rushing back to her - the mysterious Alec, the passionate encounter, the unbelievable coincidence of him now being her new bodyguard. "Oh god, what have I done?" she groaned, burying her face in her hands. This was a disaster waiting to happen. As the CEO of a multibillion-dollar company, Victoria prided herself on always maintaining a professional, composed demeanor. Now she had tarnished that carefully cultivated image by giving in to carnal temptation with a virtual stranger. Forcing herself out of bed, Victoria stumbled to the bathroom and splashed cold water on her face, desperate to wash away the lingering memories of Alec's searing touch. She studied her reflection in the mirror, seeing the guilt and uncertainty in her eyes. This was not like her at all. Victoria was always in control, always the one calling the shots. How could she have let her guard down so completely? Wrapping herself in a plush robe, Victoria made her way to the kitchen, needing the comfort of her usual morning routine. As she sipped her strong black coffee, she tried to rationalize what had happened. It was just a one-night stand, nothing more. She would see Alec later this morning when he reported for his new job, and they would both act professionally, putting last night behind them. That was the only way to salvage this disastrous situation. Just then, the doorbell rang. Taking a deep breath to compose herself, Victoria opened the door to find Alec standing there, his chiseled features set in a serious expression. "Good morning, Ms. Sinclair," he said, his deep voice sending a shiver down her spine. "I'm here to begin my duties as your new head of security." "Yes, of course. Come in, Alec." Victoria stepped aside, her heart pounding as he brushed past her, the familiar scent of his cologne filling the air. She gestured to the living room. "Please, have a seat. We should discuss your responsibilities." Alec sat down on the plush leather sofa, his intense gaze never leaving Victoria's face. "About last night..." he began. Victoria held up a hand, cutting him off. "Last night was a mistake. It can't happen again. We need to maintain a professional relationship from this point forward." "Is that what you really want?" Alec asked, his tone laced with a surprising hint of disappointment. Victoria swallowed hard, cursing herself for the flutter of desire she felt at his words. "It's what has to be. My company and reputation are too important to jeopardize with...personal entanglements." Alec leaned back, studying her intently. "Very well. I understand." He paused, then continued, "You should know that I'm not the type of man who is easily intimidated or controlled. I have my own code of ethics, and I won't compromise them, even for you." Victoria felt a flicker of unease at his words. "I expect nothing less than complete loyalty and discretion from my security team," she said firmly. "Is that clear?" "Perfectly," Alec replied, his gaze unwavering. "But I think you'll find I'm not easily manipulated, Ms. Sinclair. I have my own reasons for taking this job." Victoria narrowed her eyes, sensing there was more to this man than met the eye. "Then I suppose we'll have to see how this arrangement works out." She stood, signaling the end of the discussion. "If there's nothing else, I have a busy day ahead of me." Alec rose as well, towering over her. "Of course. I'll be discreetly monitoring the premises." He flashed her a brief, sardonic smile before turning and striding out of the room. Victoria watched him go, feeling a strange mix of relief and disappointment. There was no denying the undercurrent of electricity that crackled between them. But she couldn't afford to let her guard down again, not with so much at stake. Squaring her shoulders, Victoria began to plan her day, pushing thoughts of Alec to the back of her mind. She had a company to run, and she wouldn't let one night of indiscretion derail all she had worked for.
