Chapter 4 – Unavoidable Collision

1114 Words
The office lobby was buzzing with Monday morning chatter, the kind that made Lila’s stomach churn. She clutched her coffee like a lifeline, trying to steady her nerves. Her reflection in the glass doors mocked her—calm, composed, professional. If only the inside matched. Today wasn’t just any workday. It was the day she would have to see him again. Derek Blackwood. The man whose touch still haunted her skin, whose voice lingered in her head long after that night. And now—her boss. Sarah walked beside her, oblivious to the storm brewing inside her best friend. “You’re walking like you’re on your way to a funeral. Cheer up. Mondays aren’t that bad. Plus, rumor has it, the new director starts today. Tall, dark, devastatingly handsome, according to the gossip.” Lila nearly choked on her coffee. “Gossip gets around fast.” Sarah grinned. “Please. In this office, it spreads faster than Wi-Fi. Don’t worry, though. I’ve got my eye out. If he’s as good-looking as they say, I’m calling dibs.” Lila forced a laugh, though it felt more like swallowing glass. “Good luck with that.” The elevator chimed open, and they stepped inside. Lila’s heart pounded harder with each floor. She wanted to run, but running wasn’t an option. This was her job. Her career. She couldn’t let one night—one mistake—ruin it. By the time they reached the twenty-second floor, her pulse was hammering in her ears. “Ready to conquer the day?” Sarah asked. Not even close. --- The office hummed with energy, but the air shifted when he walked in. Lila didn’t have to see him; she felt him. That same magnetic pull, that unmistakable presence. She turned, and there he was. Derek Blackwood, in a tailored navy suit that fit him like a second skin, his expression unreadable as his sharp gaze swept across the room. For a moment, their eyes locked. Heat coiled low in her stomach, memories flashing too vividly—his lips on her neck, the sound of her name in the dark. She tore her gaze away, nearly fumbling the papers in her hand. “Good morning,” Derek said smoothly, his voice carrying across the room. Professional. Controlled. Like nothing had happened. “Good morning, Mr. Blackwood,” Marcus Lee, the office’s self-appointed golden boy, greeted him with a smile that was a little too eager. Marcus practically shoved his hand out. “Welcome aboard. I’m sure you’ll find the team ready and capable.” Derek shook his hand briefly before addressing the staff. “Thank you, Marcus. I look forward to working with everyone.” His tone was polite, but there was an authority in it that silenced the office instantly. He wasn’t here to be liked. He was here to lead. Lila kept her head down, praying he wouldn’t single her out. She could hide in plain sight, just another employee, professional and distant. “Ms. Moreno,” Derek’s voice cut through her thoughts like a blade. Her head snapped up. His eyes were on her now, cool and steady. “Would you join me in my office in ten minutes? We need to discuss the client files you’ve been handling.” Every muscle in her body went stiff. She forced a nod. “Of course, Mr. Blackwood.” Sarah shot her a wide-eyed look as soon as Derek disappeared into his corner office. “What was that about?” Lila’s mouth was dry. “Work. Just work.” But Sarah’s knowing grin said she wasn’t convinced. --- Derek’s office was sleek and minimal, all clean lines and understated power. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the city, sunlight pouring in like liquid gold. He stood by his desk, hands in his pockets, the very picture of control. “Close the door, please,” he said without looking at her. Lila obeyed, her heart racing as the click of the door sealed them in together. The air between them thickened instantly, charged with the weight of everything unspoken. “You’ve been handling the Whitman account,” Derek began, finally turning to face her. His tone was even, professional, but his eyes betrayed something else. Something darker. “Yes,” she managed. “I’ve been compiling reports and coordinating with the client’s team. Everything’s on track.” He nodded slowly, but his gaze lingered on her longer than necessary. “Good. I expect you’ll continue to handle it with the same diligence.” “I will.” Her voice came out sharper than intended, defensive. Silence stretched between them, taut and dangerous. Finally, Derek spoke, his voice low. “Lila…” Her name in his mouth sent a shiver down her spine. “This cannot interfere with your work,” he said firmly, though his jaw tightened, betraying the effort it took to stay detached. “Whatever happened between us—it ends here. Do you understand?” Lila swallowed hard, her throat dry. She wanted to argue, to say that it hadn’t meant nothing, that the memory still burned in her veins. But she also knew the stakes. Her career was on the line. “Yes,” she said quietly. “I understand.” For a moment, something flickered in his eyes—regret, maybe even longing—but it was gone as quickly as it came. He straightened, slipping back into the armor of professionalism. “Good. That will be all for now.” Dismissed. Just like that. Lila turned to leave, but her hand trembled on the door handle. She could feel his gaze burning into her back. When she stepped out, she forced her shoulders straight, her face neutral. No one in the office could know. But deep inside, she knew this was far from over. --- That night, long after the office lights dimmed and most had gone home, Lila sat at her desk, staring blankly at her computer screen. The numbers and charts blurred together, her mind replaying every word, every look Derek had given her. He wanted to pretend it was nothing. She could try, too. But the truth was undeniable. One night had changed everything. And working under him—literally and figuratively—was going to test every boundary she had. As she finally gathered her things, she glanced at his office. The light was still on. Derek stood by the window, jacket off, shirt sleeves rolled up, staring out at the city like a man at war with himself. Her breath caught. He looked untouchable. Yet she knew—he wasn’t. Not with her. And that was the problem.
