CHAPTER 9 The Death of a KingThe controversy over the Sacred Egg of Ra left its mark. Relations with Horemheb were even more strained than they had been before. In the past year or two the General had not spent much time at court, Ay being his intermediary with the King. Now Horemheb chose to stay close and supervise matters himself directly as he had done at the beginning of the reign. This led to more than one confrontation. Tutankhamun was no longer the docile child ready to do everything Horemheb wanted. He insisted for instance on restoring the great Temple of Ra at Yunu to its former glory, and, although he could not return the miraculous Egg, he presented it with some magnificent sun-pillars and statues to make it the wonder of the Two Lands.
