The SecretWhen Hapu became conscious again he thought he had gone blind from the blows to his face. He was in utter darkness and lay where he was for a long time, aware only of the throbbing in his head and a growing terror in his heart. Never to see again! How he had taken the faculty of sight for granted! He had seen blind people but he had never dreamed how dark the darkness was that they were in. Then, when he remembered where he was, another fear joined the first. What if the two men had sealed over the stairwell again? He would die here, slowly and horribly, buried alive.
