CHAPTER 3: HATRED AND TASTE OF THE UNDERGROUND
The Vince penthouse was quiet in a way that felt expensive.
The hatred started short. Robert hated that his daughter preferred my bedtime stories to that of his. He hated that I did not flinch when I heard his voice.
He hated that I was the woman from the gala who he fell in love with. Then, suddenly I disappeared, only to return as his daughter Nanny.
I hated him too, for being cold, rude, less concerned about certain things. And for treating his daughter, Ria like a security risk instead of a child. I also hated him for firing women who could not handle a grieving four-year-old child.
And I as well hated the jealousy that showed up on Friday evening.
Alexandra Deluca, tall, blonde, arrived at 6pm, in a dress that cost more than my annual salary. She was Vince’s VP of strategy. She was also “close” to Vince and secretly admired him.
“Roberto,” she purred, kissing his cheek.
“You didn't tell me you had hired a new nanny,” Alexandra said.
“Alexandra,” his tone was flat. “This is Miss Hale," the new Nanny for Ria.
“Miss Hale,” his tone brightened up a bit. “This is Alexandra,” my closest friend.
Alexandra's eyes looked over my plain blouse and jeans with hatred and disdain. “How…wholesome. Ria sweetheart, did u miss me”?
Ria hid behind my leg. Alexandra was angry and jealous that Ria was already so attached to her Nanny, me .
The fear in Ria 's eyes showed that she neither liked Alexandra.
Then I felt it, the sharp, stupid pang of jealousy, hatred and envy. Not because she wanted Vince but because Ria did. And Alexandra didn't.
Vince sat quietly and watched the whole thing, his jaw tightened, anger because he could not make Ria like Alexandra. I hated it because he could not stop looking at me whenever I bent to whisper something to Ria's ears that made her giggle. Hatred because he thought that he was slowly losing his only child to a commoner, a mere Nanny.
Alexandra's hatred grew more and more for me when she discovered that I would be a barrier for her to get to Vince's heart.
That night, Alexandra spent the night there at Vince's penthouse. After that, Ria and Robert were asleep. Alexandra went to get a glass of water and found me in the kitchen and went ahead to confront me.
“What are your plans?" Alexandra asked.
I pretended not to see her when she walked in nor hear her when she spoke.
“Why keep mute?" she asked again. But I still showed no sign of concern or had any answer to the questions she asked.
Alexandra moves closer to me. “Don't play games with me, miss Hale."
“I am not playing games with anyone. I am just trying to keep my job so that I don't get evicted,” misses Alexandra.
Alexandra, in shock that I didn't fear her, stared at me with hatred and pain, went up, got her things and left the Vince penthouse that night in anger.
Two days later,
During a quiet midnight in Vince's penthouse, after Robert, Vince's gun shipment was destroyed by his rivals. Robert Vince was angry and in pain and, in order to calm himself, he had to drink to stupor, and he eventually became so drunk that he could not even know his name and talk more about finding his way home.
He was dropped off by a friend and when he got home, he bumped into me, and one thing led to another. I found myself having a one-night stand with Robert Vince, my boss. We both found ourselves sharing each other's burdens.
By morning, Robert was shocked when he realized that I was a virgin and had just been disvirgin by him. Then he knew that I was not the type of girl he thought I was.
I was shy when I woke up and found myself soaked in my own blood.
The mutual attraction that they had ignored began to surface, pulling me into a complicated web of loyalty and desire.
Then my phone lit up, one new text from a number I never knew.
