THE DEVILS BARGAIN

CHAPTER 4: THE DEVIL’S BARGAIN After that night, I avoided Robert on several occasions, and a few weeks later I fell really ill. I ran a series of tests. Our growing connection led to a life-changing consequence:I was pregnant by my boss but forgot to trash the test result properly. In order to protect myself from Alexandra, I planned to run away. One early morning while Robert Vince had left for an emergency meeting, Ria was still asleep. I carried a few clothes and left the house with the hope of never coming back. I left the penthouse. No reference letter, no goodbye. I stared at my reflection, the one-night stand, the late night talks with Ria, the bedtime stories. All gone “Alexandra had won,” I said. A week without me, the Vince penthouse went quiet again. Ria stopped eating. She stopped speaking in full sentences and always wore a sad look. She threw her blocks at the wall and screamed until she was hoarse. Eight nannies had not broken her. But losing me, her Nanny did. The truth came out: Robert found my pregnancy test results and found out that I was carrying his child. So that history wouldn't repeat itself and his child be called a bastard, he went in search of me. Two days later, I was found. I was working in the morning at Shantel daycare and in the night cleaning offices. My eyes were tired. My hands were chapped. “Ava,” he called out to me. I looked up from scrubbing a desk and froze. I wanted to run but he grabbed me back. He then pleaded with me to return to the Vince penthouse. Come back for Ria. For …me. Why, I asked “I have watched Ria cry for days now, and I can’t fix it”. “I can't stand this house without you in it." He said. Because Ria calls for you in her sleep. Because…he stopped. Because that night was not just a night to me. He added. I agreed and returned to Vince's house with him but gave a term, which was that Alexandra had to leave. In order to protect the child from Alexandra, he proposed a marriage of convenience to me and asked Alexandra to resign, which she did. I was torn between Alexandra, my boss's secret admirer, and being forced to marry a man the world feared. I had to choose if I could ever truly trust the head of Vince’s family. But on the other hand, I considered my unborn child and did not want her to suffer as I did, I accepted the proposal. Just a few weeks into the marriage, Robert's attitude changed. He became rude, wicked and all that he promised me was never fulfilled. I felt trapped in a gilded cage, isolated and uncertain of my place in Vince's house, then I began to regret my decision of agreeing to marry Robert Vince. I struggled to adapt to strict rules where loyalty was not everything. Suddenly, my ex-boyfriend comes into the picture. Donald, my college boyfriend, we both dated till I was 25. The relationship ended when I found out that he was cheating, but I did not know who his mistress was. But this time he came back looking remorseful and begging me for my forgiveness. Due to the hatred and suffering I had faced at the hands of Robert Vince, I wanted to feel loved again. I forgive Donald and I fall right back into his arms. As time went on, I began to secretly visit Donald and we both planned to elope with Robert's unborn child which I was carrying. Robert, unaware of our plan to elope, still continues to treat me with disrespect. But when he eventually found out about their plan, he began to regret his actions. But then it was already late. He knew that he was once again about to lose his child and that history was about to repeat itself. It scared him, his territorial nature emerged. The Vince penthouse was transformed into a pressure cooker of tension. Unknowingly to me and Donald that Robert Vince was aware of our plans. The night, which was meant to be the night which I will escape, Robert surrounds Vince's house with guards. And the house was armed. Donald confronted Robert Vince about the death of his brother and his mistress, Robert's late ex-wife. Robert was in shock when he found out that my lover turned out to be the junior brother of his late wife's boyfriend. The same man who came back to avenge the death of his brother. I watched Robert’s face go pale as the truth hit him. My hands were shaking. I didn’t know. I swear I didn’t know. And he wasn’t alone. Standing right behind my lover was Alexandra. Robert Vince’s close friend. And Donald’s secret lover. His mistress. The room went dead quiet. Robert looked at me, then at Alexandra, then at my lover. “You brought them here?” Robert asked me, his voice breaking. . My heart dropped. Before I could answer, the lights cut out. And in the dark, I heard a gun click right behind me.
