CHAPTER 5:THE POISONED WELL
Tension reached a breaking point when an external threat targeted the household.
A defining alarm blared through Vince's house. Red emergency lights began to flash. That was the sign of danger.
Alexandra and Donald were back. But this time they were well armed, with escorts.
"Lockdown!" Roberts commanded. "Take her to the panic room now, and do not stop for anything."
My heart hammered against my ribs as I sprinted up the steps, scooping a terrified child into my arms.
I could hear the distinct, terrifying pop of suppressed gunfire echoing from the perimeter of the house.
The hallway blurred as I ran.
Ria was heavy in my arms, but fear made me fast. Behind me, two of Vince’s security men were moving backward, guns up, covering their retreat.
Another burst of gunfire cracked from downstairs. Glass shattered. Someone screamed — one of the house staff.
I slammed the steel door of the panic room open and dove inside, hitting the lock with my elbow. The room was sealed with a heavy thud. Lights flickered on. Monitors lined the wall, showing the needs of the estate.
Huddled in the corner, holding Ria close to my chest, I whispered soothing, desperate prayers.
Outside, the sound of chaos rose. I could hear shouting, shattering of glass, and the terrifying, relentless barrage of automatic gunfire.
Every second felt like an eternity as I wondered if Robert and his men would survive the night.
Suddenly, the heavy steel door shuddered. A violent thud echoed through the reinforced metal, followed by the sound of a keypad being aggressively punched.
I held my breath, tears streaming down my face, prepared to protect Ria with my very life.
I didn’t look. I couldn’t. I just focused on Ria’s face buried in my neck, shaking.
"Baby, it’s okay. I’ve got you. Eyes on me, okay? Just on me."
Donald. Smirking. Holding a pistol. Behind him, Alexandra, hair perfect, eyes cold. And 4 armed men moving through the house like they owned it.
Ria whimpered. "Nanny Ava ... is Daddy coming?"
I pulled her close and sat on the floor, back against the wall. "Yes, baby. Your daddy is coming. We just have to stay quiet and safe until he gets here."
My phone buzzed. Once. Twice.
Vince: _Panic room. Are you both in?
Me: Yes. Locked. Ria’s okay.
Vince: _Hold. 3 minutes.
Three minutes had never felt so long.
On the monitors, Donald was shouting. "Where is she?! Where's Vince brat?!"
Alexandra’s voice was smooth, venomous. "Check upstairs. She wouldn’t have gone far. The nanny thinks she’s clever."
My blood went cold. They knew our whereabouts.
A pounding started on the panic room door.
"Open up!" Donald yelled. "We just want to talk!"
Ria started to cry in earnest now . I pressed a hand-over Ria's mouth gently, then my own heart, rocking her. "Shh, shh. Don’t make a sound. Pretend we’re not here."
The pounding got harder. The steel dented slightly.
The front doors of the estate blew open.
Through the cameras, I saw them. Vince. With a team of his own men, moving like shadows. No shouting. No warnings. Just precision.
Gunfire erupted. Short. Controlled.
Donald spun, eyes wide, too late. Alexandra screamed.
90 seconds later, it was over.
The lock on the panic room clicked. Vince’s voice, rough and out of breath: "Ava. It’s me."
The lock clicked again, and the heavy door swung open.
I screamed, shielding the girl with my body, only to see Robert Vince standing in the doorway.
His clothes were torn. His knuckles were bruised. And there was a dark crimson s***h across his cheek.
But his obsidian eyes were fiercely alight with protective fury.
Hi
Robert didn’t waste a second.
His eyes swept the room once. Ruth. Ria. Both alive. That was all he needed.
"Ava," his voice was low, rough, like he’d been shouting orders for hours. "Are you hurt? Is she hurt?"
I shook my head, still trembling, still shielding Ria. "We’re okay. We’re okay."
Ria let out a sob and reached for him. "Daddy!"
In two steps, he was on his knees, pulling them both into him. He smelled like gunpowder and rain and something metallic I didn’t want to name. His arms were iron around them.
"I’m here," he murmured into Ria’s hair. "I’m here, baby. It’s over. I’ve got you."
Then he pulled back just enough to look at me. His thumb brushed, hard, across my cheek, wiping away a tear I didn’t realize I’d cried.
"You did well," he said quietly. "You kept her safe."
I exhaled, shaky. All the fear I had been holding in collapsed at once. "They were at the door, Robert. They knew our whereabouts," I said.
His jaw ticked. Rage flickered behind those obsidian eyes. "I know. It won’t happen again."
He stood, lifting Ria to one arm like she weighed nothing, and held his other hand out to me.
"Come on. My men have the house. Donald and Alexandra are in custody. But we’re not staying here tonight."
I took his hand. It was warm and steady, and it didn’t let go.
As we walked to the armored SUV waiting in the driveway, sirens wailed in the distance.
In the backseat, Ria fell asleep between us in under a minute, exhausted.
Robert didn’t look away from me. Not once during the whole drive.
"They came for her," he said finally, his voice barely in a whisper so Ria wouldn’t hear. "For us. Because of me."
I met his eyes. "And you came for us."
Something in him cracked at that. He reached over, laced his fingers through mine across Ria’s sleeping body.
"I’m not losing you," he said. "Not like this. Not ever."
For the first time since the alarm went off, I believed him.
Then at midnight, the elevator dinged, and his security officer stepped out holding his suitcase.
