*Trigger warning: this chapter mentions miscarriage/loss of pregnancy.
To those of you who have lived it, I’m so sorry for your loss. Stay strong!
Unknown’s POV
I watched the fox. She was beautiful. Her dark curls bounced around in the blaring lights of the club. She ran her hands up her body, pulling those curls from her sweat-drenched neck. I wanted to lick the sweet scent from her body, fill her with my own cubs. She was my perfect match, and I would have her.
I watched her all night, including the moment she caught sight of that Alpha. The bastard son of the tyrant who had killed my entire den. He was barely standing, and yet he dared touch my beautiful queen. She dared let him.
Following them to the hotel, at least he had good taste. I waited for hours as the sounds of her moans echoed from the hallway. The Beta of the Titan’s pack came after a not-so-anonymous phone call, to gather the Alpha, leaving my sweet queen in the room alone.
It took every ounce of strength I had not to find that Alpha and kill him myself, as I watched my Queen bear the pregnancy alone, but she begged me to stay by her side. We raised that pup, knowing he would be a wolf. He was so small, but he smelled nothing of us. For three years we were happy. We found a new den to live in, the Alpha Fox, a kind man who asked nothing about our history.
It wasn’t until the hunters came that my Queen and I decided to let DJ go. We ran for months; it was no life for a child. It broke her heart to leave her pup, but we had heard such good things about the Alpha over the years. DJ would be safer with his father. Not knowing what would become of us.
It had been three years, my Queen had long since passed, my own body only holding on to find the Alpha and give him this information. He had just recently bought a pack, not knowing who lived in it. It was no longer the safest place for her pup, as they would be looking for him. Along with the phoenix that was sent to watch over him.
Ian’s POV
My Buttercup was running another drill, those tights showing off her perfect ass that I loved staring at. I could feel that she was tired, but with my pushing off the sales, she wanted to spend as much time with me as she could. DJ was watching on the sidelines. He was cheering for Fallon happily, his games long abandoned.
It was week two of my sabbatical, and I was the happiest I had been. I spent my mornings training with my pack as I should have been, my afternoons with my son, and my nights with my mate. I never knew that love could feel like this, my heart was full of something besides guilt for the first time in my life. She was healing a side of me no one had seen in almost 20 years. I had been so depressed since I was eight years old, and I understood why. Now I had a reason to smile, to laugh and I couldn’t imagine my life as before.
A swift kick to the stomach sent Fallon tumbling to the ground, her pain mirrored in my body. It was nothing I’d ever felt from her. Usually, trainings were more annoying than painful. It felt as if something in my body exploded. Fallon’s scream echoed her pain.
“Baby, what’s wrong?” I wrapped her in my arms. She was hot. Too hot. Her scent wasn’t any stronger, so no heat.
A she-wolf could go into a heat, an overdrive of pheromones that the wolf used to become pregnant, after a month of being marked. The first heat was the worst, especially when marked by an Alpha.
“Cillian, it hurts.” She whimpered into my shoulder.
“Des, can you watch DJ?” I asked, walking towards the pack clinic.
“Got him, man.” Desmond grabbed DJ and took him back to the house.
I took off at a run, trying to keep Fallon as close to me as possible. Her tears broke my heart, and her pain was weakening my control over my wolf. I burst through the door trying to find the Luna's room. I internally cursed myself for not mind linking the doctor.
“Alpha, what seems to be the problem?” Doctor Hazel asked, followed by a nurse. She had wavy blonde hair, the shortest she-wolf I had ever seen, bright blue eyes.
“I don’t know. She was in training, and she got hit. It’s bad, Doc. I can feel it.” I gripped my own stomach.
“Let’s get her checked out.” The doctor moved around me to look over my Buttercup. “Alpha when was she marked?”
“Two weeks ago, she hasn’t had her heat yet.”
“Could she be pregnant?” The nurse whispered, looking at the doctor.
My eyes almost shot out of my face. Had I missed the change in her scent? I inhaled deeply, it smelled exactly as it always had. Raspberries and vanilla, deliciously sweet. My wolf tried finding any trace of a difference, but there was none. I began pacing the floor, watching as the nurses and doctors fluttered this way and that. The doctor told me of a blood test they could perform, and they would give Buttercup something to help with her pain.
After 45 agonizing minutes, the doctor rushed into the room. She pulled a machine from the corner, using it to scan over Buttercup’s belly. There was a small whooshing noise,
“Oh, s**t!” Doc Hazel growled, “Get ready for an emergency D&C, as much blood as you can find, and someone find Anne Marie.”
My wolf was on edge. Why would they need blood, or Anne Marie? She was the best surgeon in the state. Luckily for me, her mate was my Gamma. She was technically on family leave after just having had her own pup.
“What’s happening?” I commanded.
“Alpha, Luna is pregnant, but there’s an issue. One of the eggs didn’t quite make it to the uterus, but it’s been growing.”
“One of? Twins? Is the pup okay?”
The doctor sighed, “Yes and no. The one that made it to the uterus is perfectly healthy. The danger is the one that has been stuck in the Luna’s tubes.”
I shook my head. I had taken basic anatomy in college, but my mind was reeling. My Buttercup was pregnant with my pup. But it was sick. She was sick. I couldn’t lose her. I would go back to that dark place again, and I still had DJ. I needed her.
“What... what does that mean?”
“It means that we have to get it out. She’s bleeding heavily in her belly, and this can be very dangerous for both her and the pup.”
“Doc, simple words! What does that mean?”
“The kick made a small bleed worse, much worse. She’s losing the tubal pregnancy. It’s very dangerous. We can save her, but she will lose the healthy pup.”
“SAVE HER!” I commanded.
The staff took her out of the room, her scent lingering behind. She was my heaven. I couldn’t lose her. I roared, gripping my hair in my hands. I refused to imagine my life without her. I had only had her two weeks. Was this my fault? Had my past come back to haunt me? I took a life, and so the universe was taking a life from me. My brother didn’t have to die, he could have been imprisoned, but my rage overwhelmed me. He had slit my mother’s throat and left her for me to find Jilly.
I grabbed the nearest chair and crashed it into the wall, finding anything I could destroy. Falling to my knees, I began to pray. I prayed to any and every one I could. Anyone who would bring her back to me. I didn’t care who, or how, I just needed her.
I didn’t know how long I sat in the destroyed room before someone came to clean it. They moved around me, bringing in new furniture and a meal for me. I had no appetite. I couldn’t seem to connect with my wolf at the moment, so I texted Des to check on DJ. He was in the lobby, sleeping on one of the chairs.
If I lost her, I would have days, if not mere hours, to have everything set up for DJ. I would die with her; I was sure of it. I called Broadway to update him on everything that was going on. He and Noelani were expecting their first pup. I didn’t want to throw DJ on their growing brood.
“Vlad’s here, we’re coming, brother.” Broadway assured me.
I couldn’t say more so I just hung up.
I sat in one of the new chairs, staring at the place where the bed would soon be. She would make it. I knew it. She would be fine. She had to be. We had our entire lives to be together, our son to raise, other pups to have. I wanted to take her to Ireland and show her where my mother had grown up, where I had lived the happiest before I had my son and her in my life. A huge wedding, with her being an angel as she walked down the aisle to take my name, adopt our son. Her Luna ceremony, and so much more. I had plans, very good, happy plans.
She would watch DJ take over my post as Alpha, and finally meet Jilly and Nathan. We would go to Mercury and hold a mating ceremony for my brother and best friend. We would be there when Raelynn found her mate, find out whatever the hell Vlad was. Finally, when we were old enough, we would retire, and I would take her around the world. Do whatever she wanted to do. Watch our grand pups grow, maybe even have some great grand pups. And we would live peacefully.
The sun had fallen from the sky when they finally brought my mate back in. She was pale, and her scent was off, but she was alive. I could feel her warmth, hear her heartbeat. She made it.
“The surgery was little more complicated than we had hoped, but we managed to save her and both tubes.” Anne Marie said, wiping her forehead.
“She smells weird. Where’s her scent?” I buried my face in her neck, quickly pulling away.
“It’s from donated blood. Her scent will return in a day or so.” Anne Marie smiled, “Alpha, she’s a fighter. A very strong Luna.”
“Will this affect her chances? “
“No. If she so wishes, she could be pregnant during her heat. Though I wouldn’t recommend it. I would give her a few months to heal both physically and emotionally.”
I wanted to hug the doctor, tell her I was forever in her debt, but my eyes couldn’t get off my mate. I couldn’t leave her side. Even for a second.
I wrapped her in my arms, missing her scent, but I didn’t care as long as she was alive, she could smell like paint thinner, and I would still be in love with her. My wolf decided to come back at once rumbling his lullaby. It was her favorite. Even in her drug-included state, she fidgeted so her face was buried in my chest. Every night, no matter how tired we were from making love or our walks with DJ, he would rumble the song for her, and she would put her ears to my heart, and wolf. It made him so proud he could entice such a reaction from her. Moving a piece of hair from her face, I kissed her mark, her body shivering simply on instinct.
“Come back to me, Buttercup.” I whispered in her ear. “Come back to us.”
My phone rang, Broadway had arrived. I moved her to lay on the bed, gripping her hand tightly in mine. I continued to whisper sweet nothings to her, just wishing she would move. The door opened, my brother’s scent filled the room, and that extra floral scent of Noelani and the pup, and the burning smell of Vlad.
They rounded the other side, each looking over my still pale mate. She hadn’t moved.
“Brother, have you eaten?” Broadway asked, knowing the answer. “Come on, let’s let Flower and Vlad spend some time with her, while you and I go check on DJ and get something for ya.”
I shook my head, “I can’t leave her. I need to be here when she wakes up.”
“Cillian, 20 minutes. You stink, and Fallon would kill you if she saw you like this.” Broadway tried prying me away.
I knew he was right, she would be very angry, and I hadn’t checked on DJ in a while. He needed to know his Momma was awake. I kissed her forehead, promising I would be back soon. Leaving my Buttercup in the hands of our family.
