Chapter Two: Secrets and Sparks

730 Words
The next morning, sunlight spilled through the blinds in thin gold ribbons. Alex stared at her phone, still blinking at the message on her screen. Potatokiller: I've known for a while. I just... didn't want to mess it up. But I think I'm already too far gone. Too far gone. Those words echoed in her head like a song she couldn't get out of her system. Downstairs, she could hear the familiar sounds of half-sleepy teenage boys raiding the kitchen. The clink of cereal bowls. Seth's muffled voice grumbling something about hangovers. And mixed in with it, that low laugh - Aaron's. Her face flushed. He knew. The person she confided in every night, the one who teased her over bad snipes and complimented her spell builds - he'd been Aaron all along. And he had kissed her like he meant it. She slipped out of bed and threw on a hoodie over her tank top and shorts. Her bare legs felt suddenly exposed, but she couldn't bring herself to change - she was still riding that wave of confidence from the night before. Downstairs, the room buzzed with post-party energy. Empty bottles littered the counter, someone's sock was hanging from the chandelier (thanks, Tatum), and Ben was curled up on the couch in full diva mode, sunglasses on indoors. Aaron looked up from the fridge just as she padded in. His eyes caught hers - and everything slowed for a second. There it was again: the tension. Not awkward, not forced. Just thick with unspoken things. "Morning, Arrow," he said smoothly, the nickname slipping out like warm honey. Seth raised an eyebrow. "Arrow?" "Gaming stuff," Aaron shrugged, not missing a beat. "You wouldn't get it." Alex bit back her smile, her stomach somersaulting. Over the next few weeks, it was like living a dream. Every moment had layers now. When Aaron sat next to her on the couch during movie nights, their legs would brush. He'd tilt his head just close enough for her to feel his breath against her cheek. When he passed her in the hall, his hand would graze her waist - so fast no one would notice, but she felt it like a spark. And online, it was a whole other world. Potatokiller: Remember that kiss? AuburnArrow: I think about it every five minutes. Potatokiller: Every five? I'm trying to beat you at four. They played late into the nights - strategizing, trash-talking, but with an undercurrent of something deeper. It wasn't just a crush. It was connection. She felt seen - not as Seth's sister or the shy girl she used to be, but as Alex. One Saturday, the guys had taken over the house again, as usual. Alex walked into the kitchen for a glass of water only to find Aaron there, alone. He had just finished tying up the garbage bag, sleeves pushed up, muscles casually flexing as he tossed it aside. "You're doing chores now?" she teased. "Trying to earn my stay," he said, then leaned casually against the counter. "Also avoiding Tatum's Playlist from hell." Their eyes met again. That same gravity pulling them closer. He stepped forward. Just one pace. "Can I ask you something?" She nodded, heart pounding. "Did it freak you out? That I'm.. him?" She shook her head, smiling softly. "I think it makes too much sense. You've always been there - just in a different way." Aaron exhaled like he'd been holding his breath for a week. "I want to kiss you again," he said, voice barely above a whisper. "But not if it's going to get complicated." "It's already complicated," she said. "But I still want you to." He stepped closer, lifting his hand to her cheek. The kiss this time was slower, deeper - less explosive and more exploring. A kiss that said, I've wanted this for so long. Just as things were heating up, someone cleared their throat from the living room. Ben, holding a bowl of popcorn, smirked at them. "Carry on. I'll just pretend I didn't see any of that." Alex laughed, forehead against Aaron's chest. "We really suck at being subtle," she whispered. "Do you want me to talk to Seth?" he asked, his voice suddenly serious. She hesitated. "Not yet. Not until we know what this is." He nodded, understanding. "Then we keep it between us. For now."
