Chapter 12

JAMES I breathed a heavy sigh and my trembling even worsened. Even though I didn't want to, my brain was literally doing the countdown. This wasn't how I wanted to end, this shouldn't be my fate! What of my sister I vowed to protect?! What of my brother?! I held hands with my brother, locking gazes with him. Telling him it was all going to be okay but was I deceiving? "One!" My inner voice yelled and I immediately closed my eyes. The next thing I heard was screams, blood splattered across my face. "Holy s**t! Holy s**t! I'm alive! Thank Goodness!" Dave's voice jolted my eyes awake. I looked to my side, Daniel was still alive. I gasped, gripping his hand tighter. And then I looked around, Eve, Linda and Jason were okay. Then whose blood painted my face? We looked around again and there she was, a lifeless body just meters away from us. "There's no escape for us. We're trapped!" Jason mumbled. "Oh God!" Eve started crying and so did Linda. It was hopeless trying to get Dave on track. And from the looks of it, Jason seemed discouraged too. "Guys, there could be another way out!" Daniel said. "It's hopeless, our heads might as well be blown up before we even find anything." Eve mumbled as she fell to the ground. Tears freely toured down her cheeks like a stream. "No. I can't die here! I can't die here!!" I yelled to the skies. "There must be a way out. There must be." I started walking back and forth, rubbing through my long brown hair frantically. "Why did I sign up for this?! Why?!" Dave kept lamenting, not to mention the cries that filled the air. I could barely think anything through. "I don't even give a s**t anymore, I'm leaving this place!" Dave blared again and he started running towards the waters. Few others were doing the same too. "Dave, you're going to drown!" I yelled, running after him. "I don't care!" The i***t blared and surprisingly I could barely catch up to him. Some of the contestants jumped into the waters, swimming like their lives depended on it. And in a moment, the contestants in the waters started screaming. They suddenly vanished under the waters as if there was a suction below. "Dave!" I yelled. No one even needed to tell the i***t to stop midway. He quickly ran back and so were the others. Some of them were unlucky, getting dragged by the suction. And as the next second came, blood coloured the water. "s**t! s**t! s**t!!" Dave screamed in horror as he ran towards us back. He ran past me to meet the others. I frowned, feeling a haunting sensation down my spine as my gaze remained on the bloody waters. Yet, my will still didn't waver. I wasn't going to die here! "Think James, think!" I kept hitting myself hoping something miraculous could just sprout. But then again, another wave of shrieks escalated. "James, run!!" They screamed behind me, pointing in another direction. I looked in that direction. There he was, running towards me like a mad man. A knife in his hand. "Kill and don't be killed!" He yelled, launching towards me like a predator. I gasped and I immediately ran. I barely had enough strength to run but this time, It felt like I was faster than the wind. I ran towards my companions but this guy was gradually catching up to me. "James!!" They screamed and at that moment, I knew the guy was going to strike. All of a sudden another lady screamed as she barged into him. I didn't look back but I could hear his painful cry and stabbing noises. "What the hell is happening?!" I asked breathlessly as I reached them. "We don't know, everyone is just turning on themselves!" Eva responded. I was still busy catching my breath when someone fired a gun. I gasped with the look of horror on my face as Linda collapsed beside me. "Linda!!" Jason screamed but there wasn't any time to mourn or avenge, Daniel dragged him along immediately. I didn't want time either, I ran behind them as far as these weak legs could carry me. Just one look around, and everyone had already turned on themselves. Killing each other in such gruesome manners. "Run! Run!!" Dave kept screaming like a mad man as he led the race. But just like that, Linda was gone! Tears began gracing my eyes, causing my vision to be a little blurry. Soon we were back into the forest, I at least thought I could get some rest. But I was wrong, things were even worse. The whole place was a jungle where the strong preyed on the weak. Gunshots were being heard at every corner and so did the screams too. Although I couldn't look back, I was certain someone was chasing me fiercely behind my back. We didn't even know where we were headed, we just ran aimlessly. All of a sudden, I felt a log of wood hit my head. "James!" Daniel screamed but my pace greatly reduced, I couldn't breathe and my vision kept getting blurrier. My knees fell to the ground. "James!!" I heard several voices scream. I held my hand out, trying to reach out to them. But I collapsed to the sandy floor. Was this the end for me? My sister, Pearl, I vowed to save her. How could this happen? A tear dropped from my eye and I finally yielded to the darkness beckoning unto me. My eyes faintly awoke to the moonlight and stars. I felt a raging pain at the back of my head and my muscles were numb. "James!..." I recognized that voice, it was my brother's. He was tapping my face repeatedly. I guess life still had a use for me after all. "He's awake." I heard Eve say. "Oh Thank Goodness!" Dave chirped. "W-where am I?" I stuttered as I tried to move. "Oh, thank Goodness! I thought I was going to lose you!" My brother hugged me as he helped me sit up. I looked around, we were still surrounded by thick bushes. But the noises had died out, the atmosphere was completely serene. "What happened? Why is everything so quiet?" I asked and they all started glancing at each other with a fearful expression. Something had definitely happened while I was unconscious.
