Chapter 43

JAMES "Have you accessed the door yet?" I asked. "Working on it." Hugh replied and as we reached the door, the red indicator changed to green. "Done!" The door slowly slid open. "Now remember, once you enter I won't get able to open the door. The only way out his using the emergency exit door in the power supply room." He said but the three of us had already entered without letting him finish. We were immediately welcomed with bright white lights hanging from the ceilings. This was the first room in history that was ever this bright in the Arena. The room was small, a little larger than the rooms they trapped the contestants in. But there were several obvious things. I could start with the several thick wires connected around, the gentle sounds the generators made and the warmth that caressed my skin. The generators were big like Hugh had said, they were only a few inches taller than us. They stood firmly in the middle of the room, glued together. "Okay are you guys seeing the generators?" Hugh asked. "Yes." Eve and I affirmed at the same time while we kept our gaze on the white generators. "Good, the EMP is the smallest generator amidst the four of them. It's the red one, do you see it?" "Yes." I answered, staring at the red generator just beside the third white one. This was the ticket to our freedom. "Uh oh," Hugh said. "Looks like we have a major problem guys!" I gasped while the three of us stared at each other like dumbstruck fools. "What is it Hugh?" I summoned the courage to ask. "Mr. E is in the third Arena, they already found out about the power supply room and their sending scores of guards towards your location." He said. "That's not good Hugh,I thought you said you had this covered!" I raised my voice. "Breaking into the Power supply room isn't some easy feat I can attain okay. You have no idea what I'm doing here. I'm trying, trust me!" "How much time do we have left?" Eve asked. "What's going on guys? these looks on your face don't look too good." Dave remarked but we didn't bother to answer. "What the hell is going on? You guys are scaring the s**t out of me!" "Shut up Dave!" I barked, unable to contain the rage fueling in me. "How much time do we have left Hugh?" I asked and I heard him sigh. "I estimate you guys have about twenty minutes before they break in." "Twenty?!" Eve exclaimed. "Yes! That's the highest I can buy you guys." "Are you shitting us right now?! We need at least thirty minutes to turn off the generators and activate the EMP." I said. "Okay this is getting more and more dangerous." Dave interjected. "We're in trouble right? And who the hell is this guy you guys are talking to?!" But the both of us didn't pay any attention to him. "I know but you guys just have to shut down the generators and activate the EMP within that time." Hugh replied. "How, Hugh?! You said we needed to wait three minutes before switching the levers." I claimed and I heard him sigh again. "I know what I said but since it has come to this, You guys have to turn each of the levers after two minutes." I stared at the generators and all of a sudden they became scary to me. Perhaps it was my anxiety that was getting the better part of me. "I hope it won't affect our plans if we do it this way." Eve uttered. "Uhm…" Hugh said in a nervous tone and my frown deepened. "That tone doesn't sound too good Hugh!" I exclaimed in exasperation. "Are we going to get hurt?!" "Well…" "Well what?!" I barked. "There's a likely possibility there might be a power overload and ummm you guys might be electrocuted in a way." "What?!" Eve and I yelled at the same time. "Okay now you guys have to tell me what's going on here!" Dave demanded in a fierce manner but we still ignored him regardless. "Hold on! You guys might be lucky and nothing would actually happen." Hugh quickly interjected. "So you're basing our chances of survival upon luck?!" Eve queried in an infuriated manner. "I wish it doesn't have to come to this. But look, we don't have much time left guys. Let's get to work!" He chirped and I heaved a heavy sigh. He said those words but none of us could even make a single step. I stared at the generators once again and then Dave and Eve. Their expressions weren't any different from mine. Although Dave didn't hear anything, telling him would definitely be a bad idea. It took him several minutes to convince him to be here. Who knows what might happen if he heard what Hugh said. "Guys, what are you waiting for?!" Hugh's voice blared and I gulped down my saliva hoping my fears would be swallowed alongside. But it didn't, rather it overwhelmed me. "Guys!" Hugh yelled again. "Damn it, let's just do this s**t already!" I grunted whilst checking the analog watch on my wrist. "Let's do what? I'm lost here." Dave queried. "So we're doing it?" Eve asked with a concerned expression. I nodded and she heaved a sigh. "Okay Dave we're getting to the main part." She said. "What is the main part?" "We're going to shut down the generators and activate the EMP. We only have twenty minutes to do this or else we're gonna get caught." I said while I focused on the generators. "And how are we going to do this?" He asked. "You see those blue levers?" I pointed. "Yeah?" He nodded. "We're going to pull them down after a two minutes interval. We'll start from the top to the bottom." I explained. "Okay okay okay, so what's going to happen next?" He asked.
