Chapter Fifteen It started raining as I left the dark corridor. Not the good sort of rain that comes down hard enough to dampen the embers around the city. The awful kind of sputtering rain that doesn’t do much but turn the soot on the streets to mush as it carries down the smoke and ash like the sky is crying black tears. In my head, I knew the ash and smoke and filth all filled the city before the rain came. But there was something about the black dripping from the sky and oozing through the streets that made everything feel relentlessly hopeless. I didn’t walk home that night. Maybe I should have, but I couldn’t make my feet go that way. I didn’t have enough left in me to offer Mari comfort, and that’s what she would need if she woke up to find me bleeding and filthy in the middle
