The next morning, Lucas Hale stood in the warehouse on the south side of Denver, watching Marcus Webb work. The space had transformed in the four days since Lucas had first shown Marcus the blueprints. What had been an empty, rust-streaked cavern was now a functioning workshop. Marcus had brought in his own equipment—a portable welding rig, a metal lathe, boxes of tools Lucas couldn't name—and arranged it all with the meticulous precision of a man who had spent his entire career making order out of chaos. The folding table was now covered with schematics, calculations, and half a dozen empty coffee cups. A whiteboard stood in one corner, its surface covered with equations Lucas couldn't begin to decipher. "This geothermal system is incredible," Marcus said, not looking up from the diagrams he was sketching. His voice had lost the wary skepticism of their first meeting. Now it was animated, engaged, the voice of a man who had found a problem worthy of his talents. "The vent's temperature gradient is almost perfect. I can run a closed-loop system that'll generate enough power for the whole facility, plus surplus for hydroponics and water recycling. It's not complicated—the principles are basic thermodynamics. The challenge is the hardware. We need a heat exchanger that can handle the mineral content in the groundwater without corroding. I've got a design in mind, but it's going to require custom fabrication." "Can you do it?" Marcus finally looked up. His eyes were bloodshot from lack of sleep, but there was a fire in them that hadn't been there before. "Can I do it? Lucas, I've been designing industrial HVAC systems for fifteen years. I've spent my entire career bored out of my mind, making office buildings slightly more comfortable for people who didn't even know I existed. This?" He gestured at the whiteboard. "This is the kind of project I dreamed about in graduate school. A completely self-sustaining underground habitat. Geothermal power. Closed-loop water recycling. Hydroponic agriculture. You're asking me to build an ark." "That's exactly what I'm asking you to build." Marcus set down his marker and turned to face Lucas fully. The fire in his eyes was still there, but it had been joined by something more serious. The engineer's natural caution, reasserting itself after the thrill of the technical challenge. "Okay. I'm in. But before I commit to this—really commit—I need to know something." He crossed his arms. "What are we actually preparing for? And don't give me the 'something bad is coming' line again. I've been doing research. Climate data. Geopolitical analysis. There's nothing that justifies this level of preparation. Nothing visible, anyway." Lucas had been expecting this. Marcus was too smart to accept vague warnings forever. He would need to share more of the truth—not all of it, not yet, but enough to keep the engineer committed to the project. "You're right," Lucas said. "There's nothing visible. Not yet." He walked to the whiteboard and picked up a marker. "What do you know about the Arctic ice core samples from the Greenland drilling project?" Marcus frowned. "The ones that got buried a few years back? The data was suppressed, if I remember correctly. Some kind of political controversy." "The data showed a pattern. A cycle of rapid cooling events that happened every twelve thousand years, going back millions of years. The cycle wasn't natural. It was too regular. Too precise. The scientists who published the data lost their funding. Their careers were destroyed. But their research was solid." Lucas drew a rough timeline on the whiteboard. "We're at the end of the current cycle. The next cooling event is overdue." "That's a hell of a leap," Marcus said. "From ice core samples to building a bunker in the mountains." "I'm not asking you to believe the theory. I'm asking you to believe the preparation. If I'm wrong, you walk away with a year's salary and an interesting story to tell at parties. If I'm right..." Lucas let the sentence hang. Marcus stared at the timeline on the whiteboard. His jaw worked silently, the engineer's mind processing the information, weighing the variables, calculating the probabilities. "If you're right," he said slowly, "we're going to need more than a geothermal system. We're going to need a supply chain. Medical equipment. Seed banks. Weapons." "I know." "And people. You can't run a facility this size by yourself." "I know that too." Marcus nodded. He walked back to the blueprints and stood looking at them for a long moment. When he spoke again, his voice was quiet. "My ex-wife thinks I'm wasting my life. She said I never took risks, never did anything that mattered. Just showed up to work, collected my paycheck, came home and watched TV. She wasn't wrong." He turned to face Lucas. "I don't know if I believe your ice core theory. I don't know if I believe anything you've told me. But I believe in this." He tapped the blueprints. "If there's even a one percent chance you're right, building this bunker is the most important thing I'll ever do. So I'm in. Fully. Whatever it takes." Lucas extended his hand. Marcus shook it. The grip was firm, calloused, the hand of a man who built things with his own sweat. "Welcome aboard," Lucas said. "Now let's talk about your budget." Two hours later, they had a plan. Marcus would handle the engineering—the geothermal retrofit, the water recycling system, the air filtration, the hydroponic setup. He would source the materials, fabricate the custom components, and oversee the installation. Lucas would handle everything else—funding, logistics, recruitment, and the delicate work of keeping their operation hidden from the people who would try to stop it. "I'll need to visit the site," Marcus said, gathering his notes. "These calculations are theoretical. I need to see the geothermal vent myself, take measurements, test the water chemistry." "Next week," Lucas said. "I'll drive you up there myself. But first, I need you to do something else." He pulled a folder from his briefcase and handed it to Marcus. "I need a list of suppliers. Companies that sell the equipment we need, no questions asked. I need recommendations for additional personnel—people you trust, people with skills we're going to need. And I need a realistic timeline. How long to get the basic systems operational?" Marcus opened the folder and scanned its contents. "Basic systems—power, water, air—I can have those functional in six weeks. Full operational capacity, including hydroponics and living quarters? Three months, minimum. And that's assuming no delays, no supply chain issues, no equipment failures." "Three months." Lucas nodded. That was the timeline. The first storm would hit in November. By December, the world would be unrecognizable. Marcus's three-month estimate would bring them right to the edge. "Then we don't have any time to waste." "I'll start today." Marcus hesitated. "Lucas? My daughter. She lives with her mother in Colorado Springs. If something does happen..." "We'll make room for her," Lucas said. "And for anyone else you need to bring. That's the point of all this. We're not building a bunker for ourselves. We're building a sanctuary." Marcus nodded. Something moved in his expression—gratitude, maybe, or the first stirrings of a loyalty that would, in another timeline, have been buried under a collapsed parking garage. "I'll get to work," he said. Lucas watched him go, then turned back to the whiteboard. The timeline stretched across its surface, a countdown to catastrophe written in dry-erase marker. Three months. Twelve weeks. Eighty-four days. He picked up the marker and added one more line at the bottom of the board: Build something worth surviving for.
