Chapter 14: The Partial Truth

Three days after his meeting with Clara, Lucas found himself standing in the warehouse on the south side of Denver at six in the morning, watching Marcus Webb weld a custom heat exchanger while explaining thermal dynamics to a man who had never asked for the explanation. "The problem isn't the temperature," Marcus said, his voice muffled by the welding mask pushed up on his forehead. "The problem is the mineral content. That groundwater has been filtering through granite for about ten thousand years. It's loaded with dissolved solids that'll eat through standard stainless steel in six months. I need a nickel-chromium alloy that can handle the corrosion. Problem is, that alloy is expensive, and the only supplier who carries it in the quantities we need is in Cleveland." "Order it," Lucas said. "I did. They said six to eight weeks." "That's too long." "I know it's too long." Marcus pulled off his welding gloves and tossed them onto the workbench. "I've been calling in favors, trying to find a closer supplier, but this isn't exactly off-the-shelf hardware. We're building a geothermal system designed to run for a decade without maintenance. That requires materials that aren't easy to find." Lucas stared at the half-assembled heat exchanger. Six to eight weeks would push them into late October, dangerously close to the first storm. If the Cleveland supplier was delayed—and suppliers were always delayed—they might not have the system operational before the world started falling apart. "What about alternatives?" "There's a company in Germany that makes a ceramic composite. Better performance, longer lifespan, but it's three times the price and requires specialized installation. I'd have to fly someone in, or fly myself out there for training." Marcus paused. "You said we're on a timeline. How firm is that timeline?" "Very." "How firm is the budget?" "Less firm than the timeline." Marcus nodded slowly. "Then I'll call Germany. If we're building an ark, we might as well use the best materials available." Lucas felt a twinge of satisfaction. This was what he needed from Marcus—not just technical expertise, but the ability to adapt, to find solutions when the obvious path was blocked. In the first timeline, those qualities had been buried under a collapsed parking garage before anyone knew they existed. In this timeline, they were going to save lives. While Marcus placed his call to Germany, Lucas walked to the other end of the warehouse, where a second workstation had been set up. This one belonged to Lily. She had transformed her corner of the space into something that looked like a cross between a library and a hacker's den. Three computer monitors were arranged in a semicircle on a desk she'd salvaged from a thrift store. External hard drives were stacked in neat, labeled towers. A whiteboard covered one wall, filled with a flowchart of databases, archives, and institutional repositories that Lily was systematically downloading. "How's it going?" Lucas asked. Lily didn't look up from her keyboard. "I've archived approximately twelve percent of the Library of Congress's digital collection, eight percent of the British Library, and about three percent of everything else on my target list. At this rate, I'll be done sometime around my ninetieth birthday." "That's not fast enough." "I know it's not fast enough." Lily's fingers flew across the keyboard. "The problem is bandwidth. Most of these institutions throttle download speeds for non-affiliated users. I'm working on getting academic credentials for my team, but that takes time." "What about direct access? Physical servers?" Lily finally looked up. "What do you mean?" "I mean, what if we could get you inside one of these institutions? Direct access to their servers, no throttling, no restrictions. How fast could you work then?" Lily's eyes widened. "You're talking about breaking into a library." "I'm talking about saving human knowledge before it gets buried under forty feet of ice." Lily was quiet for a moment. Then she pulled up a map on one of her screens. "The University of Colorado's digital archive has a server farm in Boulder. It's one of the largest academic repositories in the country. If I could get physical access to their mainframe, I could download their entire collection in about four hours." She looked at Lucas. "But that's not something you can just ask for. We'd need credentials, access codes, probably a forged work order." "Can you get those things?" Another pause. "I know someone. A former hacker who owes me a favor. He could probably put together what we need. But Lucas, if we get caught—" "We won't get caught." Lucas's voice was steady. "And even if we did, it won't matter in three months. The laws we're breaking won't exist anymore." Lily stared at him for a long moment. Then she nodded slowly. "Okay. I'll make the call." Lucas left her to her work and walked back to the center of the warehouse. Marcus was still on the phone, speaking in halting German to someone who apparently didn't speak English. The morning sun was starting to filter through the high windows, casting long shadows across the concrete floor. They were making progress. Slow, frustrating, inadequate progress. But every day they got a little closer. Every day, the ark took shape. His phone buzzed in his pocket. A text from Clara. Need you to come to my office. Found something in the geological survey you're not going to like. Clara's office was in its usual state of organized chaos when Lucas arrived—blueprints on every surface, half-empty coffee cups in strategic locations, and a whiteboard covered in calculations that looked like they belonged in an engineering textbook. Clara herself was standing at the drafting table, her auburn hair escaping from its knot, a red pencil tucked behind her ear. "You look terrible," Lucas said. "I've been up since four." Clara gestured at the geological survey spread across her table. "I've been going through the USGS data for the San Juan Mountains. The bunker's location, the surrounding terrain, the fault lines. And I found something." "What?" She pointed to a cross-section diagram of the mountain. "There's an aquifer running through the granite about two hundred feet below the bunker's lowest level. It's been stable for millennia, but the geological record shows evidence of periodic seismic activity along a fault line that runs directly beneath it." "How periodic?" "Every twelve to fifteen thousand years." Clara looked up at him. "The last major event was approximately twelve thousand years ago." Lucas felt a chill that had nothing to do with the office's air conditioning. "You're saying there's going to be an earthquake." "I'm saying the geological record suggests the possibility of seismic activity in the near future. I can't predict exactly when or how severe. But if that fault line moves, and the aquifer is disturbed, the bunker's lower levels could flood within hours." She paused. "The eastern tunnel would be the first to go." The eastern tunnel. The structural flaw. The death trap that had killed three people in the first timeline. Kwan's journal had described the collapse as a sudden event, triggered by a tremor that no one had predicted. Lucas had assumed it was a random event. He hadn't realized it was part of a larger pattern. "Can we reinforce it?" "Against a collapse, yes. Against a flood?" Clara shook her head. "That's a different problem. We'd need a drainage system, sump pumps, backup power. And even then, if the aquifer pressure is high enough..." "Then we need to move the critical systems higher up," Lucas said. "Hydroponics. Medical supplies. Living quarters. Keep the lower levels for storage, nothing that can't be abandoned in an emergency." "That's a complete redesign of the interior layout." "Can you do it?" Clara was quiet for a moment. Then she picked up her pencil and began sketching on a fresh sheet of paper. "I'll need to reorient the living quarters around the central ventilation shaft. Move the hydroponics to the middle level, next to the geothermal access point. The medical bay should be on the same level as the main living quarters, near the emergency exit." She looked up. "It'll add two weeks to the construction timeline and about fifteen percent to the budget." "Do it." "Lucas." Clara set down her pencil. "I need to ask you something." "Ask." "You've been preparing for this for weeks. You've liquidated your savings, bought a bunker, hired an engineer, and recruited your sister to build a digital archive. You're acting like a man who knows exactly what's coming." She met his eyes. "How do you know?" Lucas had been dreading this question. He'd known it was coming—Clara was too smart, too observant, to accept vague warnings forever. But the full truth—the ice cave, the decade of survival, the betrayal and death and impossible rebirth—was still too much to share. Not because he didn't trust her. Because he wasn't ready. "I've seen patterns," he said. "Data that other people have ignored or suppressed. I've spent months connecting dots that most people don't even know exist." "That's not a complete answer." "No. It isn't." He held her gaze. "I'm asking you to trust me anyway. I know how that sounds. I know I don't deserve it—not after the way I treated you before. But I'm asking." Clara studied him for a long moment. Then she picked up her pencil again. "I don't trust you," she said. "Not completely. Not yet. But I trust the work. I trust the design. And I trust that whatever you're hiding, you believe it's necessary." She turned back to her sketch. "That's enough for now. It won't be enough forever." "I know." He left her office with the geological survey tucked under his arm and the weight of everything he couldn't say pressing against his chest. Clara was giving him time. He needed to use it wisely—and he needed to figure out how to tell her the truth before the truth became irrelevant.
