Vivienne’s First Move

"Look at this! Just look at what your precious ex-wife is doing!" Celeste shouted, her heels clicking loudly against the marble floor as she stormed into the private breakfast lounge. She slammed her tablet directly onto the glass table, right next to Alan’s untouched espresso. Alan didn't look up immediately. He kept his eyes on the financial terminal screen on his laptop. "Take it away, Celeste. I’m in the middle of reviewing the European market opening." "Oh, the European market can wait, Alan. Your dignity can't," Celeste sneered, crossing her arms. "Scroll down. Read the headline. It's trending everywhere on Twitter and the LA gossip blogs." Alan’s fingers paused over the keyboard. With a cold, calculated sigh, he pulled the tablet toward him. The headline stared back at him in bold, aggressive lettering: SPOTTED: BILLIONAIRE’S EX-WIFE FINDS A NEW ‘PROTECTOR’ IN HOLLYWOOD? Beneath the text was a blurred but unmistakable night-time photograph. It was Elena. She was walking out of a glass studio building in Los Angeles, her head slightly lowered, and standing just a few feet behind her in the soft amber light of the lobby was Marco Reyes. Alan felt a sudden, violent thud in his chest. His breathing hitched, his eyes locking onto the way Marco’s gaze seemed to linger protectively on Elena’s silhouette. A dark, roaring storm began to brew beneath his ribs. "See?" Celeste laughed bitterly, leaning over the table. "Dad roared at me last night at dinner, calling her a saint! A martyr! And what is she doing now? The ink on the divorce papers isn't even dry, and she’s already throwing herself at some hot-shot Hollywood director. She probably had this 'connection' lined up long before she left New York." "Shut up, Celeste," Alan said, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register that made his sister step back. "I'm just stating the obvious, Alan!" Celeste defended herself, though her voice trembled slightly. "She refused your ten million dollars because she knew she could get a better deal out there by playing the helpless, tragic victim!" Alan ignored her. He grabbed his personal phone, his thumbs rapidly typing a number. "Jonathan," Alan spoke coldly into the receiver the moment his chief of security picked up. "There’s an unauthorized tabloid article circulating regarding Elena. Track down the source IP of the photograph. Buy out the publishing rights of the blog, and have the entire thread wiped from the internet within the next ten minutes. Do you understand?" "Understood, Mr. Halberg. We are on it," the voice on the line replied. Before Alan could disconnect the call, the heavy oak doors of the lounge swung open. Vivienne walked in, holding a beautifully lacquered wooden tray containing a steaming ceramic bowl of homemade broth. "What's going on in here?" Vivienne asked, her voice soft, melodious, and filled with maternal warmth. "I could hear Celeste's voice all the way from the corridor. Alan, you shouldn't stress yourself so early in the morning. I made some traditional French onion soup for you." "Vivienne, look at this!" Celeste pointed at the tablet. "Elena is already making a fool out of our family name in California!" Vivienne set the tray down gently on the edge of the desk. She walked over, leaning down slightly to look at the screen. Her eyes widened in a flawless, well-rehearsed display of shock and deep sorrow. "Oh, dear..." Vivienne gasped softly, pressing a hand to her lips. "Is that... is that Elena with Marco Reyes?" "Yes! She's practically throwing herself into his bed for a movie role!" Celeste snapped. "Celeste, leave the room. Now," Alan ordered, his eyes never leaving the photograph on the tablet. His jaw was clenched so hard a small muscle twitched violently beneath his skin. Celeste rolled her eyes, grabbing her purse from the chair. "Fine. Enjoy the counterfeit saint, Alan. Dad’s precious little angel is showing her true colors." She slammed the door behind her as she exited. The lounge became suffocatingly quiet. Vivienne stepped closer to Alan, her face a perfect canvas of concern and profound pity. "Alan, please don't be angry with Jonathan or the security team," Vivienne said softly, her hand reaching out to touch his arm. "And... please don't be furious with Elena either." Alan looked up, his eyes dark, piercing, and dangerous. "You’re defending her, Vivienne? After this?" "I'm not defending the action, Alan, I’m just trying to understand her," Vivienne sighed, lowering herself into the chair beside him. She looked down at her lap, her fingers twisting together in a display of pure anxiety. "We have to be realistic. The entertainment industry in Los Angeles is incredibly cruel, especially for a woman starting over with absolutely nothing. Elena refused your settlement money. She has no steady income, no corporate backing, and no family connections left in New York." "She chose to leave," Alan retorted, his voice thick with a bitter, unresolved anger. "She didn't have to leave penniless." "I know, but her pride is her own enemy," Vivienne murmured, her tone dripping with a carefully calculated, sympathetic venom. "Think about it logically, Alan. A woman completely cut off from financial resources... how else is she supposed to survive out there? It’s only natural that she would look for a 'protector.' Someone powerful like Marco Reyes who can open doors for her overnight." Alan’s chest tightened. He stared at Vivienne, his mind racing. "What exactly are you trying to say?" Vivienne looked directly into his eyes, her expression soft, entirely devoid of malice, yet her words were designed to plant a lethal, corrupting seed in his mind. "I'm just saying... Hollywood directors don't hand out leading roles to unknown women out of charity, Alan. Marco Reyes is known for being extremely exclusive. For him to shield her like this, so publicly... they must share a very deep, very old familiarity." The words hit Alan like a physical blow to the stomach. An old familiarity. "They went to the same university," Alan muttered, his voice barely audible as a dark, toxic suspicion began to bloom in the corners of his mind. "Exactly," Vivienne whispered, leaning in just a fraction closer. "Perhaps... perhaps this connection isn't as new as we think it is. Maybe Elena always knew she had a safe harbor waiting for her on the West Coast. It would certainly explain why she was so quick to pack her bags and walk away from a five-year marriage without shedding a single tear or demanding a single dollar. She didn't need your money, Alan. She already had him."
