Chapter 8

After the rogue attack, Erica spent the rest of the week at Amanda’s house. Her father, Philander, had been too busy at the hospital to scowl at her every move, which was a relief. Though the situation with the injured pack members was dire, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of freedom with his attention elsewhere. As she closed up the shop for the evening, Erica placed her apron into her knapsack. The late afternoon sun was beginning to set, and she debated how to spend her night. Her phone buzzed just as she reached for her jacket. “Hey, Mandy, what’s up?” Erica answered, popping in her headphones as she strolled down the sidewalk. “E!! There’s a party at the Alpha’s house tonight!” Amanda shrieked over the line, her excitement palpable. Erica winced and slightly pulled one of the earbuds away from her ear. “Alpha Aeseni? He doesn’t seem like the party type.” “Not him, you goof! Alex! Alpha Alex! He’s throwing the party!” Amanda clarified. “Come home so we can get ready!” Erica hesitated. “I don’t have anything to wear to a party. I was just thinking about stopping by Hellfur’s for a quick drink.” Amanda was relentless. “You can borrow one of my dresses! Please, E! You never come out. This is a chance to have some fun!” With a sigh, Erica gave in. “Fine, fine. But I’m only coming because you sound desperate,” she teased, turning on her heel and heading back toward Amanda’s house. --- “Amanda, this dress doesn’t fit,” Erica muttered, frowning as she turned in front of the mirror. The peach-colored wrap dress Amanda had insisted she wear felt too revealing, with cutouts along the sides and ruffled trims. Her breasts seemed on the verge of spilling out, and she was certain that her thighs were peeking from under the hem. “You look amazing, E! Stop being so self-conscious,” Amanda said brightly as she sprayed herself with perfume. “That color is perfect on you!” Erica tugged at the dress, still unconvinced. “I feel like one wrong move, and everything’s going to fall out.” Amanda laughed, grabbing a brush to style Erica’s hair. “You never wear dresses, and you’ve got a killer body. Trust me, this is your night to shine.” As Amanda worked on her hair, Erica tried to relax. She wasn’t used to dressing up, let alone for a party at the Alpha’s house. Her usual uniform was jeans and a hoodie. But Amanda was persistent, gathering Erica’s hair into a high bun and pulling a few strands loose to frame her face. “There,” Amanda said, stepping back to admire her work. “You’re going to be the hottest one there. Just wait.” Erica reluctantly smiled, glancing at her reflection. She had to admit, Amanda had done a great job. Maybe tonight wouldn’t be so bad after all. --- At the Gold Moon Pack mansion, the party was already in full swing when their Uber pulled up. The sprawling estate was lit up, and the sound of music and laughter spilled out from the grand entrance. People from multiple packs mingled in the garden and on the porch, drinks in hand. “Wow, this is bigger than I expected,” Erica mumbled as she stepped out of the car, adjusting the dress for what felt like the hundredth time. “I think Alex invited half the packs in the region,” Amanda replied confidently, applying another coat of red lipstick. Her sleek platinum blonde hair gleamed under the porch lights, and her white bodycon dress made her look like a goddess. As they approached the entrance, Erica couldn’t help but ask, “Is Sire going to be here?” Amanda blushed furiously and picked up her pace. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Erica chuckled. “Uh-huh. Sure.” Inside, the mansion was even more impressive. Black and gold decorations draped the walls, and a DJ played upbeat music as the crowd swayed to the rhythm. Omegas moved swiftly through the guests, offering hors d'oeuvres and drinks on silver trays. “Whoa, is that Erica Hood?” a familiar voice called out. Erica turned to see Luca, Jani’s son, grinning at her. “Hello, Luca,” Erica replied dryly, rolling her eyes. “You look great! Didn’t know you had… you know, curves!” he teased, his playful grey eyes gleaming. Amanda stepped in before Erica could respond. “Why are you here?” she asked, her voice flat. “Why wouldn’t your future Delta be here?” Luca laughed, unfazed by Amanda’s attitude. “You’re gross, Luca. I hope Jani never lets you be Delta,” Erica shot back, grabbing Amanda’s hand and pulling her away before Luca could make another comment. As they made their way deeper into the party, the music changed to a faster tempo. “This is our song!” Amanda squealed, and the two of them couldn’t resist dancing along, laughing and singing at the top of their lungs. After a while, Amanda slipped away, leaving Erica to grab a drink. She wandered toward the quieter part of the mansion, seeking a break from the noise. Her feet took her outside into the garden, where the cool night air was a welcome relief from the heat of the crowded room. She had only taken a few steps when she sensed someone watching her. Turning quickly, she saw Alex standing a few paces away. “I promise I wasn’t going to scare you,” he said, offering a sheepish smile. Here’s a refined version of your passage with hints of their connection and heightened senses: --- “Hello, Alpha,” Erica said politely, her voice more formal than usual. **Oh no, am I even supposed to be out here?** she thought, her heart quickening. “I’m sorry, I just wanted some fresh air,” she added, suddenly aware of how the dress clung to her, leaving her feeling exposed under his gaze. Alex’s eyes, a deep, stormy blue-green, lingered on her for a moment too long. “I get it. That’s why I’m out here myself,” he laughed softly, his voice carrying a warmth that unsettled her. He stepped closer, and Erica noticed the subtle scent of pine and something darker, more intoxicating, trailing after him. “You look… nice. The dress suits you.” His words were simple, but there was an intensity behind them that made her cheeks flush. She turned quickly, hoping to hide the redness creeping up her face. “This isn’t really what I expected when you said you wanted to catch up with old friends,” she said, trying to regain her composure. She couldn’t shake the feeling that his gaze still followed her, even as she put distance between them. “This wasn’t what I had in mind either,” Alex admitted, now matching her pace again. “Demetria thought it would be fun. I was thinking something smaller. Like a movie night—there’s a theater in the basement.” He shrugged. “A horror movie marathon, actually.” Erica glanced at him, feeling the slightest pull in her chest as their shoulders brushed briefly. A strange warmth spread through her body, her senses sharpening for a split second. **What was that?** “I don’t like horror movies,” she said, frowning in an attempt to shake the odd sensation. “What? Are you still a pup?” he teased, nudging her playfully. The instant their bodies touched, both of them froze. The lightheartedness of the moment dissolved as something electric pulsed between them, heightening every sound, every breath. Erica’s heart raced, and the air around them seemed heavier, charged. For a moment, neither spoke. Their eyes met—both surprised, both confused. Something unspoken hung between them, unfamiliar yet impossible to ignore.
