Eallva opened her mouth, not sure what she was going to say but it was going to be witty. The reality of her situation reasserted itself when a faint wail sounded on the other side of the wall. A wordless howl of raw pain and despair, like an animal dying of heat in the desert, its cries echoing through the night. Both youths froze in sudden fright. Too afraid to squeak let alone speak, Eallva caught Jablo’s attention with her tail, pointing out of the tunnel. He wasted no time in scurrying his way to the exit as quietly as he could while still moving quickly. She followed closely in his wake. They didn’t stop once they left the cramped hole.
