Mrs. Carpenter was really kind and stopped me for dinner.
At the dinner, Rey arrived too.
Rey took my hand with a smile that felt carefully practiced. “Come, let’s wash our hands before dinner.”
Mrs. Carpenter and the others looked at us with satisfaction, their eyes filled with warmth. They wanted to see the sisters they had longed for—united, caring, and close.
But as soon as we left the reception room and turned a corner, Rey’s grip loosened. Her entire demeanor shifted.
