The morning light filtering through the curtains did little to ease the tension in the safe house. I glanced over at Mia, who was still asleep, her small body curled up on the makeshift bed. The events of the past day weighed heavily on me, and I struggled to keep my fear in check. I knew Ace would be frantic with worry, but I had to stay strong for Mia.
Suddenly, there was a soft knock at the door, and I jumped, my heart racing. I approached cautiously, peeking through the peephole. To my immense relief, it was Sheriff Daniels. I opened the door a crack.
"Good morning, Mrs. Lisa," he said gently. "We’ve got some new information. May I come in?"
