“The Accident”When he heard the call come over his battered old police scanner, Brody’s first reaction was stunned horror. Then he thought about Tamarin. “Oh, my God!” He was already on his feet, and halfway out his apartment door, before his panic-stricken words had finished echoing around his cluttered little home office. And all the way across town, as he broke every speed limit in the zippy red convertible that was his heart’s pride, he prayed that she was safe. He was only minutes behind the fire truck and ambulance—but even so, he had to park several blocks away, and dodge gawkers who were scattered haphazardly along the traffic-clogged street. Sirens shrilled and wailed through the sultry summer air…then were drowned out, as he finally staggered to a panting stop at the perimeter
