Chapter 7: A Spark in the Dark The hotel room was dimly lit, with the sound of soft jazz playing from the vintage radio on the dresser. Sofia sat cross-legged on the bed, flipping through a brochure for a nearby art gallery. She looked up to see Ethan fidgeting with his phone, pretending to look busy but obviously stealing glances at her. “I’m surprised you like art,” Ethan said, breaking the silence. He leaned against the dresser, trying to sound casual. “I thought you were more of a...hiking and adrenaline kind of girl.” Sofia chuckled. “I can appreciate a good painting, you know. Besides, art is just like hiking—it’s all about the journey and what you discover along the way.” Ethan raised an eyebrow. “That’s a pretty deep thought for someone who couldn’t find her way back to the hotel from the café this morning.” “Hey!” Sofia threw a pillow at him, laughing. “I was just... exploring.” “Exploring a route that led us to a goat farm.” Ethan dodged the pillow with a grin. “We’ve been locked in this room together for hours, and I’m learning you have a great sense of direction—towards chaos.” Sofia smirked. “Maybe chaos is just what your boring life needed.” Ethan looked at her for a moment, a playful twinkle in his eye. “You know, you might be right.” He pushed off the dresser and walked toward her. “Okay, Miss Adventurer, how about we add a bit more excitement to this evening?” Sofia tilted her head, curious. “What do you have in mind?” He pulled out a tiny, dusty board game from the hotel closet. It looked like it hadn’t been touched in years. “Truth or Dare... the board game version,” Ethan announced, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. Sofia burst out laughing. “I haven’t played that since high school! Are you serious?” “Dead serious,” Ethan replied. “Unless you’re afraid?” “Afraid? Of you? Please.” Sofia grabbed the game from his hands. “Let’s see what you’ve got, Mr. Boring.” They settled on the floor, each taking turns spinning the tiny plastic bottle that came with the game. The questions and dares were as silly as they were unpredictable. “Truth or Dare?” Ethan asked, the bottle pointing to Sofia. “Dare,” she replied confidently. He glanced at the card. “I dare you to… do your best dance moves for a full minute.” Sofia laughed. “Easy!” She jumped up and started a comically exaggerated version of a tango, twirling around the room with invisible partners, dramatically throwing her head back and striking ridiculous poses. Ethan clapped and cheered, his laughter filling the room. The next round, Sofia’s turn. “Truth or Dare?” she asked. “Truth,” Ethan answered. She smirked. “Tell me about your first kiss.” Ethan paused, a hint of color rising to his cheeks. “Okay, okay. It was in middle school, behind the bleachers. Her name was Jessica. She had braces and a huge obsession with unicorns. She leaned in for the kiss, and I panicked and sneezed. Right in her face.” Sofia burst out laughing so hard that she almost knocked over the game board. “Oh my gosh, that’s priceless!” They continued playing for what felt like hours, the game eventually turning into a series of personal confessions and dares that were more about making each other laugh than winning. By the end of it, both were lying on the floor, catching their breath from laughing too hard. As the evening drew on, the energy in the room shifted. The laughter quieted, replaced by a more comfortable silence. Ethan looked over at Sofia, her face still flushed from all the fun. She caught his gaze and smiled softly. “Thanks for this,” she said quietly. “I haven’t had this much fun in a while.” “Me neither,” he replied. “You’re…different. In a good way.” There was a moment—a spark in the dark room—where everything seemed to pause. Sofia’s eyes flicked down to Ethan’s lips for just a split second, and he noticed. He slowly leaned in, his hand brushing hers on the carpet. The soft jazz music seemed to fade away as their faces drew closer, breaths mingling in the space between them. Then, suddenly, the lights went out. Complete darkness. Sofia let out a surprised yelp, and Ethan’s face, now inches away, was barely visible in the dark. They both burst into laughter. “Looks like fate wants to keep us on our toes,” Sofia said. “Or maybe it’s just giving us another adventure,” Ethan replied, his voice closer than she expected. They stayed like that for a moment, eyes adjusting to the dark, the spark still lingering between them. Maybe this locked-in experience wasn’t so bad after all.
