Chapter 4: The Unexpected Guest The next few days passed in a blur for Emily and Jake. They were getting more comfortable with each other and had settled into a daily routine of work, meals, and the occasional heated argument over the last piece of dessert. However, beneath the surface, there was an undeniable chemistry brewing between them. One morning, Emily woke up to find Jake already in the kitchen, preparing breakfast. She leaned against the doorway, watching him expertly flip pancakes. "Never took you for a pancake artist," she teased. Jake glanced over his shoulder, flashing her a grin. "I’m a man of many talents. You just haven’t seen them all yet." Emily rolled her eyes, but her smile betrayed her. She took a seat at the kitchen island, watching him. “So, what’s on today’s agenda?” “Work, work, and more work,” Jake replied. “Unless you have a better idea?” Emily thought for a moment. “Well, I was thinking of doing some yoga in the living room. Care to join?” Jake chuckled. “Me? Yoga? I’m not sure the world is ready for that sight.” “Come on, it’ll be fun!” Emily coaxed, enjoying the idea of seeing Jake attempt some yoga poses. Just as Jake was about to respond, there was a sudden knock on the door. Emily and Jake exchanged surprised looks; they hadn’t seen anyone else for days. “Are you expecting someone?” Emily asked. Jake shook his head. “No. You?” Emily shook her head as well. They both cautiously walked to the door. Jake opened it slowly, revealing a middle-aged woman standing there with an air of familiarity. “Mom?” Jake exclaimed, his voice filled with surprise. The woman stepped inside with a warm smile. “Hello, darling! I decided to drop by since you’ve been holed up here for a while. And who’s this lovely lady?” Jake turned red, clearly flustered. “Uh, Mom, this is Emily. Emily, this is my mother, Karen.” Emily quickly put on her most charming smile. “Nice to meet you, Mrs. Collins.” Karen's eyes sparkled with curiosity. “Oh, please, call me Karen. And how do you know my Jake?” Jake and Emily exchanged a quick glance. “We’re, um, colleagues,” Jake started. “And neighbors,” Emily added. Karen’s eyebrows rose, her lips curving into a knowing smile. “Oh, neighbors and colleagues? That’s quite a combination!” Emily tried to keep her composure, but Karen’s tone suggested she had already drawn her own conclusions. Jake, on the other hand, was practically squirming. “Mom, what are you doing here?” “I wanted to check in on you, dear. And maybe get to know this lovely young woman a bit better,” Karen said, taking a seat in the living room as if she owned the place. Emily couldn’t help but feel a bit nervous under Karen's scrutinizing gaze. It was one thing to be stuck in a cabin with Jake; it was another to face his mother. “So, Emily,” Karen began, “what do you do for fun when you’re not working or, uh, spending time with my son?” Emily smiled politely. “Oh, I love painting, reading, and yoga—actually, I was just about to do some before you arrived.” Karen’s eyes widened with delight. “Yoga! That sounds wonderful. Jake, you should join her. You always did need to work on your flexibility!” Jake looked horrified. “Mom, no.” Emily burst out laughing, unable to hold it in. “Come on, Jake, looks like it’s settled!” As they set up yoga mats in the living room, Karen continued to chat away, asking Emily all sorts of questions about her life. Emily found herself surprisingly relaxed; Karen was a bit nosy, but she was also warm and kind. She could see where Jake got his charm. When they finally began the yoga session, Jake tried his best to keep up, but it was clear he was struggling. Emily watched him attempt to stretch and balance, and she couldn’t help but giggle. “Jake, I think your mom was right. You really do need to work on that flexibility.” Jake shot her a mock glare. “Laugh it up, Emily.” Karen watched the two of them with a satisfied smile. It was clear to her that there was something special between them, even if they hadn’t realized it themselves yet. And she was determined to help them see it. As they moved through the yoga poses, the room filled with laughter and light-hearted teasing. For a moment, it felt like they were all just a big, happy family—an unexpected but welcome surprise for both Emily and Jake. Little did they know, this was only the beginning of the delightful chaos that Karen would bring into their lives.
