Chapter 3: A Flustered Encounter The next morning, Mia awoke to the smell of freshly baked croissants wafting through the house. She stretched lazily and realized she was still in the comfortable guest room of Leo's luxurious but surprisingly cozy apartment. Memories of their banter from the previous night replayed in her mind, causing a smile to tug at her lips. Determined to break the awkwardness that seemed to linger between them, Mia decided to make a peace offering. She freshened up, braided her hair into a simple plait, and slipped on a comfortable outfit before heading toward the kitchen. There she found Leo, wearing a plain white t-shirt and navy sweatpants, fumbling with a French press. "Morning," she greeted, trying to sound casual. Leo looked up, startled, nearly spilling hot coffee grounds on the countertop. "Oh, hey! Morning," he replied, a little flustered. "I was just, uh, making coffee. It’s not going well," he admitted sheepishly. Mia chuckled, walking over to help him. "Here, let me show you. You need to pour slowly," she said, taking the kettle from him. "And don’t press it down too hard, or it’ll get all bitter." As they stood close together, Leo couldn’t help but notice the faint scent of vanilla and lavender that seemed to cling to her. He cleared his throat, trying to focus. "Thanks. I guess coffee isn't my strong suit." "No worries. I’ve had enough practice. My best friend, Claire, is a coffee fanatic," Mia responded with a smile, expertly pressing down the French press. She poured them each a cup, handing one to Leo. "Here, try it now." He took a sip and nodded approvingly. "Much better. You’re a lifesaver." They settled at the small kitchen island, sipping their coffee in companionable silence for a moment. Mia decided to seize the opportunity to ask something that had been on her mind since last night. "So, Leo, what exactly do you do for a living? You mentioned finance, but that’s pretty broad." Leo’s eyes sparkled with amusement. "Are you trying to figure out if I’m some boring Wall Street guy?" Mia laughed. "Well, maybe a little. But also, I’m just curious." He leaned back in his chair, looking thoughtful. "I work in venture capital. I help startups get the funding they need to grow. It’s a mix of finance, entrepreneurship, and a bit of risk-taking. Keeps things interesting." Mia raised an eyebrow, impressed. "That does sound interesting. So, you're like a dragon from 'Dragon’s Den' or 'Shark Tank'?" Leo chuckled. "Something like that, though maybe less dramatic. And you? Still planning to open that café?" "Absolutely," Mia said, her eyes lighting up. "I’ve been saving up for years, and I’ve got a business plan. Just need the right location and a little more funding." Leo’s lips curled into a small smile. "Well, you’ve got a good business mind and a knack for making great coffee. Sounds like a recipe for success." Their conversation flowed naturally after that. They talked about their childhoods, their dreams, and even their pet peeves. Mia found herself genuinely enjoying Leo's company. He wasn’t at all the stuffy, uptight guy she’d imagined him to be when they first met. Instead, he was funny, smart, and surprisingly down-to-earth. Suddenly, their laughter was interrupted by the loud buzz of the intercom. Leo stood up to answer it, his brow furrowing. "Hello?" A voice crackled through the speaker, almost inaudible. "Package delivery for Mr. Romero." Leo glanced at Mia. "I wasn’t expecting anything, but I’ll go check it out." He made his way to the door, leaving Mia to finish her coffee. A few minutes later, he returned with a small, neatly wrapped package and a curious expression. "Weird. There’s no return address," he muttered as he carefully opened it. Inside was a single, crisp envelope and a note that read: Keep her safe. Details to follow. Mia looked up at Leo, her face paling slightly. "What does that mean?" Leo shook his head, his easygoing demeanor suddenly replaced by a more serious, protective one. "I’m not sure, but it seems like we might have more to talk about than just coffee and venture capital." To be continued...
