CHAPTER 12 Devon Every Monday after school, Finn goes to his grandparents, and I pick him up there. Dad and Finn are making meatballs when I arrive. As usual, his opening line is to tell me where my mother is. “She’s celebrating wine o’clock in the backyard,” Dad says. After I’ve kissed my son and my father hello, I go to find my mother whom I consider to be one of my best friends. Ever since I came out of the closet at the tender age of sixteen, there isn’t a thing I haven’t confided in her. “Mrs. Douglas,” I greet her. “Ms. Douglas. Do sit.” She beams me a wide smile. “It’s lovely to see you, sweetie.” An empty glass waits for me.
