CHAPTER 8 Devon A slew of butterflies flutter in my belly as I open the door to the bakery. Zara is busy with a customer and I take the time to look around. Half the wares on sale are gluten-free; the other half sugar-free, some both. That’s how things are in California now, especially in the long-reaching shadow of Silicon Valley. “Hey.” She beams me a wide smile. “Just a second.” She tells the other man behind the counter she’ll be taking a break, then heads toward me. “You came.” She looks a touch surprised. “I was overcome with an unquenchable need for a sugar-free cupcake.” “I have plenty of those.
