Chapter 40. Meeting the beta

1270 Words
Hunter felt bad as soon as Andrea walked out the door to go to work. He knew he would face serious trouble as soon as he walked through the office doors, people's comments could hurt so much, but he couldn't protect her from those kinds of feelings. I loved the moments they had shared during these days, the meals, laughter and memories that were created around their relationship. I lay in her bed, looking up at the ceiling realizing that we were living as a couple. It was sweet of him, the way he had integrated me into his life, the werewolf thought. The phone rang somewhere in the house, he let it ring a couple of times, but at the insistence he stopped to look at who it was, then he noticed it was the pack's emergency number. —Who is it?— he answered with annoyance. —I am Julian, I am part of the security team, an alert has been issued for the grouping of the male members of the herd, your presence is requested in the main family house— the tone of his voice left no room for a reply. An alert? wondered the man, it was strange that someone had given that kind of order, that means that there was something really important going on. —Who gave the order?— he exclaimed with concern. —The leader Harley did it and was seconded by the leader Harold— those words made Hunter let out a smile surprised by the coordination between them as alphas, as if they forgot that Hunter was one of them. —What about me, am I not part of this pack? Are you not going to inform me about the situation? There was silence on the other end of the line. —If they were taking the risk of being listened to right now, it was because they had a very powerful enemy, it had been a long time since there was someone who could face them as a pack, the man thought. —I'll be on my way, and you'd better hope it's worth it, because I'll make a new face for them if they waste my time. He hung up. That was a code, Hunter would not use the traditional ways of humans he would use the forest, he thought of using his wolf part that was so hidden so he could be with Andrea, as soon as he transformed and started running he felt liberated, as if he had been taking a great burden on his back, as he ran freely through the field he realized that there was a smell that he did not know identified near the border, they were wolves, but they were not part of his pack. Their scent was too intense to be ignored, he thought that he possibly didn't notice it when he came with Andrea because he was absorbed in his moon, but now, it was certainly too much to ignore, he approached towards the border to realize that it was only males, everyone knew that they accepted refugees, but these guys didn't seem to want to give themselves up to be accepted. He headed in their direction, all alone, that was the safest way to deal with them. He was an alpha, after all, most of them seemed simply omegas. As soon as he stepped out of the border, the werewolves turned to see him in a more threatening manner, Hunter opted to become human to make it the least intimidating affair, he stood completely naked in front of a bunch of strangers, there were eight or ten of them, at least that he could feel now. —Good morning, gentlemen— exclaimed the alpha —we've seen you've been camping for a while, we just wondered how long you'd be doing it for— he assumed that was the reason his brother and father were doing this whole alert thing, this had to be the emergency. The male werewolves, all alone, arriving to swarm, it was a declaration of war all the way from any pack, they wouldn't risk it to find out which one it was. There was a collective silence, a beta stepped forward to take the lead in the situation. —We are here peacefully— his protective attitude was evident, he stuck out his chest showing intimidating enough for the alpha to think if he was approaching to fight them. —I never said otherwise. We only wanted to know if they wanted to take the refugee measure because it doesn't seem to be the case— the man was ready to pounce on them. —We are camping only, we did not cross the line of their territory, is that a problem— seeing their tents, the way they tried to control themselves so as not to surround him, he could feel the tension in the atmosphere. The wolves of the Garroway clan knew that according to their plan they should stay there, to hide the tunnel they were building, there they were keeping the weapons. They were nervous, watching the only wolf who had dared to cross the boundary. —So? they're just passing through, right?— His instincts told him that something terrible was going on, not only did they feel threatened by a wolf confronting them, he needed to find out what it was all about. —Hunter knew it, there were too many for him to deal with all of them at once, if there were four or five of them, he could do it easily. He let out a laugh. —This is not a threat to go to war, don't worry we're not going to fight— Hunter tried to look less intimidating, after all he was even naked in front of them, he took a step forward to get in a range where he could move over the beta in front of him —Come on don't take things so personal. Everyone finally seemed to let their breath out. The alpha was quicker, putting his clawed hand on the beta's neck, digging the claws into his skin, when they all moved, he simply transformed his finger into a claw to put it on his jugular to give him a quick cut in case they moved. —What are you doing?— the beta announced. —Making sure everyone calms down, because as they are peacefully here, you are going to accompany me to the base of the herd, to talk to the leadercase they moved— The Garroway werewolves looked at each other, pondering what would happen if they all attacked him at once. —I know they think they'll be faster, they think they can kill me before I kill him, but they won't. Even if they can hurt me, I'm not going to hurt you, I'm not going to hurt you. Even if they can hurt me, I am an alpha I am in a completely different league than you and I will do as much damage as I can before reinforcements arrive, even if they kill me, they will hunt you like dogs to death, there will be no place in the world where they can hide. One of the wolves laughed —You have no idea who we are. —Nor do you, who I am. —Don't be an egomaniac. No one will come after us. —I doubt very much that Harold Halland's son will be allowed to transcend without anything else— the tension in the atmosphere worsened.
