The next few days passed in a blur. Leah continued to collaborate with Sam, and they were thriving in their work, but her feelings were becoming increasingly complex. While she enjoyed their banter, she couldn’t shake the guilt of her growing attraction to him.
One afternoon, as they worked late in the office, Sam leaned back in his chair, a thoughtful expression on his face. “Leah, can I ask you something?”
“Sure,” she replied, her heart racing slightly.
“What do you think about taking risks?” he asked, his gaze steady. “Like, in life and relationships?”
Leah hesitated, surprised by the question. “I think they’re necessary sometimes. Growth doesn’t come from staying in your comfort zone, right?”
“Exactly,” Sam said, leaning closer. “Life is too short to hold back. I think it’s important to go after what you want. You seem like someone who’s still figuring out what that is.”
Leah swallowed hard, feeling the weight of his words. “I am. I’m trying to navigate a lot right now.”
Sam smiled softly. “Just know that I’m here for you, whatever you decide. I think you’re amazing, and I’d love to get to know you better—if you’re open to it.”
Her heart raced at the implication behind his words. “Thanks, Sam. That means a lot.”
But just as the moment hung in the air, Leah felt the sharp pang of guilt return. She thought of Ethan—his insecurities, his trust, and how far they’d come. She couldn’t deny that Sam’s attention made her feel valued, but it also felt like a betrayal to Ethan.

Confronting Choices
That evening, Leah returned home, her mind swirling with confusion. She picked up her phone and scrolled through her messages, stopping when she saw a text from Ethan.
Ethan: Hey, I was thinking about you today. Want to meet up later?
She hesitated, wanting to reach out to him but also needing to sort through her feelings. After a moment, she replied.
Leah: Sure, I’d love to. Let’s meet at our café?
After a quick response from him confirming the time, Leah felt a mix of excitement and apprehension. She needed to be honest with him about everything—her feelings for Sam, the turmoil within her, and the fact that she was still unsure of what she wanted.
When she arrived at the café, Ethan was already there, looking more relaxed than the last time they’d met. His eyes lit up when he saw her, and he stood to greet her with a warm hug.
“Hey,” he said, pulling back to look into her eyes. “How was work?”
“It was good, busy,” she replied, feeling a flutter of nerves. “I had a lot of discussions with Sam today.”
Ethan’s expression shifted slightly, and she could see the tension creeping back in. “What about?”
“About the project, but also… life in general,” she said, taking a deep breath. “He asked me what I thought about taking risks in life and relationships.”
Ethan nodded, his brows furrowing. “And what did you say?”
“I told him that I think it’s important to go after what you want,” Leah admitted, searching Ethan’s face for understanding. “But I’m still trying to figure out what I want. I want to be honest with you about this.”
“Honesty is good,” Ethan said, his voice steady. “But just to clarify—are you saying you want to explore things with Sam?”
Leah swallowed hard, the weight of the question hanging in the air. “I don’t know. I mean, I enjoy spending time with him, but I care about you, Ethan. You’re important to me.”
Ethan’s expression softened, but Leah could see the hurt in his eyes. “I don’t want you to feel guilty about being open to new experiences, but I also don’t want to be an option for you. I want to be the one you choose.”
“Ethan, you are the one I want. But I also can’t ignore that I’m drawn to Sam, and I need to figure out what that means for me,” Leah said, her voice trembling slightly.
Ethan looked down, taking a deep breath. “I get that. But it feels like a lot is changing, and I’m afraid that I’m not going to keep up with all these changes.”
“Then let’s figure it out together,” Leah replied, reaching for his hand across the table. “I want to be here for you, just as much as I want to be here for myself. I’m still learning about us and what this means for both of us.”
Ethan looked up, his expression a mixture of hope and vulnerability. “I appreciate that. I just need to know that I’m still a priority for you, even if you’re exploring other connections.”
“You are a priority for me, Ethan. I’m not trying to push you away. I just want to be open to what’s happening around me,” Leah reassured him. “It’s not easy for me either. I care about you deeply, and I don’t want to hurt you.”
Ethan’s shoulders relaxed a little as he nodded, but the unease remained. “I just wish I could feel more secure in this. Sometimes it feels like I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop.”
A New Understanding
Leah took a deep breath, trying to find the right words. “I understand. And I don’t want you to feel like that. Maybe we can set some ground rules? Like, if things start to shift in a way that feels wrong, we talk about it immediately. No hiding, no avoiding.”
Ethan’s gaze softened, and a small smile began to form. “I’d like that. Communication is key, right?”
“Exactly,” Leah agreed, her heart swelling with a renewed sense of connection. “And just so you know, no matter what happens with Sam, you’re the one I want to build a future with. I can’t predict everything, but I’m willing to fight for us.”
Ethan leaned forward, their hands intertwined on the table. “I want that too, Leah. I want us to make this work. Just… give me a heads up if things change.”
“I will,” she promised, a weight lifting off her chest.
