Chapter 26 – Speaking again.
Jaspers POV
Back to the drawl of school, and I was leaning against one of the walls waiting for the bell to ring for our second period. I had my eyes closed, not sleeping but dozing carelessly. I could hear people and smell them before they got within 10 feet of me, so I was safe from anyone.
Ivy was still avoiding me and had even cancelled our tutoring lessons for the last few weeks. I did catch her glancing at me during the classes we shared though and even heard Jesse ask her what was wrong between us when they met up after school. Jesse had finished school last year, but they were still inseparable. She either hadn’t answered or had text her because I didn’t hear a reply.
I smelt her before I saw her, the croissant baked smell floated through the hall towards me and I heard giggles and chattering. I turned my back to the group, and stood properly, no longer leaning, just waiting for them to either line up behind me or walk straight past me.
“Jasper?” I heard a voice ask, instead. It was Ivy. My heart stopped beating for a second as I turned to look at her, her chocolate eyes staring straight into mine as if she was reading my soul.
“Yes?” I asked, frowning at her.
“Are you up to much this weekend?” I nearly choked on my own saliva. What? She looked at me and I hoped my facial features hadn’t given me away.
“It’s my birthday but besides that, no. Why?” Her eyes widened.
“Your birthday? When?” She asked. s**t, I needed to be truthful if we were ever to move forward but I knew she might use this as a connection again and as much as I did want her to eventually find out. I wanted to tell her, so she fully understood. I sighed heavily, I was waiting until after Sunday to finally start moving forwards with her. Hoping the mate bond got stronger.
“Sunday…” There it was, I could see the cogs turning in her brain. Wolf Jaspers got you day was Sunday; however, it would be a far reach to know his birthday even though it was my birthday. I had been turning 7 when I transformed and fell off the cliff. However, instead of her getting that determined, I knew it look in her eyes, they turned sad.
“Want to do something?” She asked and for the first time in nearly 11 years, she seemed shy and coy. I was flabbergasted.
“Erm, sure. Trackers busy with his new girlfriend so I was just going to do something boring like hike anyways.” I had fully intended on spending the day as a wolf with a brief run around the forest at some point. She smiled and I saw one of her friends elbow her in the ribs.
“Meet me at mine around 11? I have plans with my wolf in the morning.” I nodded but was immediately curious about her plans with me in the morning. I nodded and smiled before turning back to class as the bell rang.
Ivys POV
“Oh my god” I breathed as Emily, one of my friends, started poking me in the arm. We were sitting down at our desks at the front of the class, and I slapped her knowing Jasper might be seeing this. We weren’t children anymore, after all we left school this year and in a few months none the less. I immediately pulled out my phone to let Jesse know. She had been nagging me since my birthday about what I was going to do. I wanted to get closer to him and apologise for the years I tormented him, but I also wanted to talk to him about my wolf, see if there was anything there. Once and for all figure out whether my mind was still a child’s mind, making up stories to fit a narrative, or if the pieces I had put together lead to a weird unrealistic world that was actually real.
“I can’t believe you asked him out!” Emily whispered into my ear during class. I smiled. “He’s terrifying.”
“He really isn’t Em. Hes actually quite sweet. He just acts macho and horrible to protect himself… I think.” I said, turning back and noticing Jaser drop a smile he had on his face when he saw me look. I turned around quickly, definitely feeling my face heat up.
The day went past fairly quickly, and it was time for me to get on the school bus. Now Jesse had left there weren’t many people on the bus that I knew. I really wanted to sit next to Jasper, but I also didn’t want him to think I was coming on too strong. I knew he thought I still hated him deep down but that wasn’t the case at all. I saw him in his usual place at the back and looked for a few seconds before sighing and dropping into one of the seats at the front. I leant on the window, looking into the trees and wondering if I should have a nap.
Suddenly, I felt the seat at the side of me drop down. Someone had sat next to me, and I turned to see it as Jasper. My breath caught in my throat.
“Hey, do you mind if I sit here? I want to be first off of the bus, plus we’re the only two people from our town who get off at the edge of town now.” I looked at him and his smile was genuine, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. I nodded but turned back to look out of the window. I could feel my entire body heating up, there was a dizziness overtaking my senses and I could swear I could hear his heartbeat and breathing. “So, how’s school been? Not long left now.” I could hear the smile in his voice as he spoke. Small talk? Really?
“Yeah, not long now… exams though…” I sighed. “You ready?”
“Sure am, thanks to you. Are you ready?”
“Yeah, I’m just going to revise my ass off.” I chuckled, not making eye contact still.
“Want to revise together?” I turned to look at Jasper and noticed he wasn’t looking at me, but at his hands which were clasped in his lap. I couldn’t help but soften at that.
“That sounds good.” Maybe I wasn’t coming on too strong and Jasper actually wanted to spend time with me. Maybe I wasn’t imagining that he liked me, regardless of my other theories. “Want to start tutoring back up?” I asked, looking at him, and he finally looked back and me and smiled.
“Yeah, I would like that.” Suddenly he smiled and raised his hand towards my face, and I panicked. He moved one of my braids, which had fallen over my cheek, and tucked it behind my ear. The moment seemed to last forever as where he touched felt like I had been shocked with a large amount of pleasurable electric and the area warmed up significantly. Jasper looked into my eyes; his face serious. I saw his eyes change colour again as Jasp’s did then he smiled brightly, moved his hand and started talking about his football team, animatedly. What the heck was that? I asked myself and my conscience didn’t answer me like it usually did. I sighed and smiled, listening to Jasper’s voice.
