Chapter 11 – Mates
Jaspers POV
“Why are they stupid?”
“Look we’ll talk in private ok but if you’ve felt them then you need to know. They are from your fated mate, the person youre supposed to be with forever as a wolf.” I furrowed my eyebrows confused.
“Wait so like my future wife?” I asked.
“Pretty much, but ill explain in detail more later.” He said as he finished tying his trainers and got up to join the running team. I sighed and joined them shortly after.
After I had got off the bus, transformed to walk Ivy home then made sure she was happily studying I ran to Trackers cabin. I wanted to talk to him about this mate stuff. If what I felt with Ivy was mate sparks then I was pretty sure I needed to get her to like me in human form so we could end up together, but how did that even work with humans?
I got to Trackers after dressing like usual in the cabin to hear raised voices.
“You’ve got to Tracker!” I heard his mum shout.
“I really don’t do I?” He growled. “I’m not doing that to her, and you won’t interfere.”
“What if I find her one day then? Shall I kill her? Because that’s the only other option.”
I knocked on the door and heard Trackers voice.
“You wouldn’t dare…”
“Try me!” she answered before I heard a door slam.
“Hey! Everything ok? I heard shouting.” Tracker shook his head and rubbed his head.
“Long story, but I’ll tell you because it actually fits perfect with our topic of conversation.” He let me in, and I sat on the couch as usual.
Trackers POV
I headed into the living area of my cabin; my heart was in a massive turmoil as I began explaining things to Jasper. I was annoyed because he should have an adult explaining this or should have learnt it in wolf school, but I also knew how hard things were for him, not remembering his packs name or even his own surname, just slight things about his family.
“OK, so a mate bond…” I began, thinking of the best way to explain this. “Is something the moon goddess created to ensure a wolf finds their other half, the person that completes them.” I saw Jasper look grossed out by this but carried on. “It was originally created just for alphas to find their luna so they could lead a strong pack but somewhere down the line all wolves were given the bond. It was made to make us better, stronger, more empathetic or whatever it was we were missing. The goddess would find someone for us.”
“So, like if I was too bossy, she would find someone who wasn’t bossy to teach me how to be less bossy?” Jasper asked, genuine curiosity in his voice.
“Yeah, that’s a good way of putting it.”
“Ok, so how do we know we’ve found them?” I sighed at this. Recounting my memories from earlier that day. I sighed heavily.
“Well, the most important thing is you have to be 18, but first you would smell them; their scent will smell amazing to you and be unique only to you. So, for example, if my mate smelt like blueberries, you would only smell their normal body odour or whatever they had showered in probably mixed with their natural wolfen smell. I however would only smell blueberries, even if they were covered in blood or doused in pickle juice.” Jasper laughed at this.
“Ok what else? These tingles that Onyx mentioned?” I frowned, wondering why Onyx would have mentioned them.
“The tingles are the second part of the connection. First, just in case a wolf loses their sense of smell or maybe they had an accident. The tingles are meant to feel pleasurable having s*x or mating even more pleasurable.” I sighed.
“Are you ok?” Jasper asked and I closed my eyes, tilting my head backwards so it faced the ceiling.
“Not really…” Jasper got up off the sofa and put his hands on my shoulders. I looked at him.
“You can tell me anything Tracker, ill help if I can.” I nodded.
“I scented my mate a year ago…” I answered with a snarl. Jasper looked happy then noticed I wasn’t and looked at me confused.
“Ok… why aren’t you happier?”
“I said I smelt them, nothing more. It’s complicated…” I remembered what had happened and growled a little. “I had been hunting that afternoon for deer or something to last us the weekend when I smelt her scent. I didn’t know it was that at first… I saw her but she was only 15. She won’t know who I am for another year or so now. Also, she likes someone else. I also don’t really want a mate.” Jaspers eyes got wide.
“WHY?” he shouted, then realised and put his hand over his mouth.
“It’s…”
“Complicated?” He asked with a sad smirk. “I get it Tracker, tell me when youre ready.” I nodded in thanks; it was hard talking about my past and what had happened to my mother.
“There are other things too, like you can’t have two mates but if you reject your first mate you might get a second chance one, although that usually only applies to Alphas like you. And you won’t feel the pull towards humans or some other magical beings.” Jasper frowned at this, and I think I knew why he was asking…Ivy.
“How would you reject a mate?” He asked, this took me by surprise.
“You both have to accept it. You would use your full name and title and say you reject them, and they would have to accept, or the other way around.” He nodded and seemed deep in thought. We talked a little more about the mate bond and then about school. When I approached the subject of Ivy, he was outraged that she had offered to tutor him. I laughed and he hit me.
“Well, at least we’d spend more time together as a human.” He joked.
“Maybe you should do it?” I said to him. “After all, I leave this year and you still have 2 years left. Maybe you should actually become her friend in human form too. Then maybe one day you can tell her everything.” He only nodded and then realised it was getting late. I waved him goodbye, wondering if he wanted Ivy to be his mate.
Jaspers POV
So, the smell I smelt around Ivy of baked croissants and the tingles could be the mate bond. But they didn’t happen all the time. I wondered if it was because I was a wolf and not human. Maybe Tracker was right, and I needed to become her friend in real life too.
But then Onyx reminded me of the smell from my birthday, of wet grass and cinnamon. That wasn’t normal and it made him agitated, he wanted to know more. Could that have been our mate too? I didn’t know. But what I did know is that tomorrow, I would be taking Ivy up on her offer as my tutor.
