Chapter 8 – High school
Jaspers POV
The next year passed as normal; I visited Tracker every weekend. I built up my collection of clothes and trinkets and I had indeed gotten my ear pierced. It hurt like hell when Tracker pierced it, but I wasn’t going to show it. The weird part was that as a wolf I had a scar on my ear and Ivy had noticed it. She spent the afternoon crying that I must have found another wolf, and I was going to leave her. I kept licking her hand to tell her I wouldn’t, but she was inconsolable.
Jesse had gone up to high school the previous summer, so Ivy had spent an entire year just constantly glaring at me and her head buried in books. I must admit I didn’t help matters, she annoyed me, always making wolf me study so I would often take it out on her in human form. I would often walk past her and call her a nerd or ask her if she studied so much because she was stupid. Childish? Absolutely, but she annoyed me.
Her grades had improved immensely though, and she was the top in the class, however, she was disappointed when I was just behind her. I mean, we did “study” together. If she knew I was learning off her as a wolf I’m sure she would stop learning with me in the room.
It was finally the end of, yet another summer holidays and Ivy and I were starting High school. We were finally 13 and Ivy was excited to get to ride the bus, the possibility at new friends but most of all the excitement at finally being allowed near the nearest city.
I was looking forward to seeing Tracker again as well as meeting new people but mostly to see if I could find any details about my pack. Tracker told me there weren’t any werewolves at our school, which was common but that some of the offices in the city were wolf run businesses.
The first day of school I nearly missed the bus as I had to leave at the sae time as Ivy, see her on the bus then run to the woods to transform and get dressed. Today I was wearing faded blue jeans, a blue t shirt and a new leather jacket. My ear piercing was in too and I apologised to the driver as I got on the bus. I saw tracker and saw he had saved me a seat, so I headed for him. It was at the back of the bus, and no one seemed to want to sit near him.
“Hey!” I said and he nodded his head. “This feels weird!”
“Yep, high school is weird, but it’ll be nice to have another wolf there. Everyone is so crap at sports!” I laughed hard, excited to try out for every sports club.
When we arrived all the new starters were put together for a tour and Ivy obviously avoided me. However, due to being the top two in our class we actually ended up sat together for a lot of our lessons that day.
The high school was huge compared to what we were used to and the classes were hard. I enjoyed maths though and actually answered more questions than even Ivy did. She just sat and glared as per usual. Then the best part of the day came. Sports! I tried out for everything and saw Tracker was part of a few teams. Football, basketball and the running club. I got onto all of those teams and got a high five from Tracker. A lot of people stared at us strangely.
“Whats their problem?” I asked, causing Tracker to growl a little.
“Ignore them, they’re just jealous were so amazing!” IT was weird but Tracker was defiantly more bitter than usual here. I look over the humans and did notice that they were whispering about us.
“Got a problem?” I shouted at them.
Don’t! Tracker said in my mind, but it was annoying. The humans stopped their talking and carried on with whatever activity they were supposed to be doing.
I won’t stop Tracker. They have no rights to be awful like that… He just shrugged and started jogging around the running track again. I followed and caught up to him pretty quickly.
“Has it been like that since you started?” I asked.
“Pretty much, they don’t like that I’m quicker or stronger than them.” He shrugged as we jogged.
“Well, it’s not on.” I said, wondering if we should tone down our werewolf powers which were certainly starting to show now. Tracker at 16 was slowly starting to show muscles and a defined body. His hair was now down to his shoulders, and he kept it tied back in a ponytail.
My hair was around my ears, having learned to cut it myself on Ivy’s laptop when she and her family were out. And I was starting to get defined muscles but nothing like Tracker yet.
Why should we change who we are? Onyx said in my mind.
To fit in…I answered
NO! you are strong and powerful. You should be in charge. Show them your worth Jasper, our worth. I nodded and carried on running.
A few months went by, and I understood completely why Tracker had lost his smile at school. High school was brutal. Older kids constantly bullied us, and we had to fend for ourselves as no one seemed to band together like in our old school. Tracker and I were clearly the best sports men on the teams, but people refused to pass to us or to race us.
I was sat in Trackers kitchen, seething.
“Its stupid!” I shouted at Tracker who was just nodding in agreement, chewing some jerky “No wonder people in my old pack hated humans so much.”
“Yeah, we didn’t ever deal with humans in my old pack” That took me by surprise, Tracker never spoke about his old pack. I didn’t say anything hoping he would say more. “Our old Alpha” he spat “didn’t like humans and would often remind us we were better than them.”
“Didn’t you like your old alpha?” I questioned.
“He was awful.” Was all he said. “What about you?”
“Oh…” Id never spoke about this before, and it was awkward because I didn’t actually remember much. “From what you’ve told me, I think my dad was the alpha…” I trailed off, looking for Trackers reaction.
“So you’re a future alpha?” he questioned.
“Yeah, I guess so… but I doubt I would be now. Even if I found them again Ive had no training and to be honest, I don’t think I would want to be.” I answered truthfully. Tracker just nodded his head. Suddenly I heard a door open in the house and I was on my feet growling. Tracker laughed, his guffaw that I hadn’t heard in a while.
“Calm down guard dog, its my mum.” My eyes opened wide. I saw a woman with extremely long hair enter the living area. She was mumbling to herself and headed to the kitchen as if she didn’t even notice me.
“Mum?” Tracker called. She looked up from the refrigerator she had just opened, and I gasped. Her eyes were pure red, a rogue’s eyes. Why weren’t Trackers eyes that red? “This is Jasper, the one I’ve told you about. Hes a rogue too, kind of, and hes our friend.” His mum didn’t speak but stared right at me then sniffed up.
“Hello!” I murmured. She sniffed again then smiled.
“Friend!” she smiled, grabbed a can of soda, then went back to her room. I looked at Tracker questioningly.
“She’s extremely ill. That’s why you don’t see her often.” He looked sad and I just nodded my head. “Anyways, lets think of a way we can get the i***t from the football team back for his tackling this week.” I chuckled and we put our heads together to come up with something.
