Chapter 20 – Another werewolf? Jaspers POV It was the day of the party. Ivy still helped out in the café that morning, so I went in human form, dressed in my usual leather jacket, black jeans and a pale blue t-shirt. I had on black doc martins, and I was supporting a new piercing in my eyebrow. She smiled and waved at me, making a comment and grimacing at the new piercing. “I hope youre wearing something different tonight.” She teased. I shrugged pretending I might not. She rolled her eyes and brought me a coffee to my table. I had actually bought some faded blue jeans, dress shoes and even a blue shirt to wear tonight. Dressy but not too much. I had also planned to gel back my hair as shed only ever seen it messy. “Are you excited?” I asked, knowing she was. This morning, she had practically leapt out of bed and squeezed the life out of me before running downstairs and frantically unwrapping presents. “Yeah, it’ll be cool.” She answered, nonchalantly and I couldn’t help but smile at her trying her hardest to hide it. She looked at me and I hid my smile. She looked at me with a strange look but carried on doing what she needed to. “So, where’s Jasper? Not seen him in a while.” She looked at me with an eyebrow raised. “You’ve met Jasper?” I smiled at her slyly. “Not officially, but Ive seen him constantly around you. Hes like your shadow isn’t he.” She tilted her head at me, genuinely confused now. That’s what I wanted. I wanted her to second guess things. “Hes nice, I like wolves.” “Oh?” She seemed less confused and more interested now. “I didn’t know that.” “Yeah, did you know wolves’ mate for life? And they usually only have one mate. They also have a hierarchy.” She looked at me with her mouth open in surprise. “I assume Jasper is a lone wolf. Tracker told me you adopted him as a pup. Right?” She nodded, still not speaking and staring at me, a little glassy eyed which confused me. “Yeah, he was half drowned down by the river. I took him in until we found his family but there have been no sightings of wolves locally. Although…” She paused and bit her lip. “There was once we heard a wolf howling and Jasp seemed extremely interested. Do you think he recognised them?” I bit my lip, not knowing how to reply here. I didn’t want to give too much away. “I’m sure he was curious at hearing a sound similar to what he can do. But hes formed a strong bond with you to have been around you since he was small. How many years have you had him?” “Oh gosh it’ll be coming up to… 11 years. Wow he’ll be 18. I didn’t even know it was possible for a wolf to live that long.” “Oh yeah, captive bred wolves can live a long time. Although I think the oldest was 19…” I internally slapped myself. Why the hell did I say that. It was true, I had googled it when Tracker told me she would start getting curious when I didn’t pass away like a normal wolf. “BUT…” I shouted before she could react. “The eldest living dog in captivity was 30. So, maybe because hes amongst humans he will have years left.” “Yeah, he doesn’t seem old. He hasn’t started going grey yet.” I laughed nervously. Suddenly the café door slammed open, and a scent hit my nostrils. Wet grass with a hint of cinnamon. The smell was intoxicating, and Onyx was howling in my head. She was a werewolf. I couldn’t drag my eyes away from her. What was happening? “Hey, can I get a latte to takeaway please?” The girl asked Ivy. However, Ivy wasn’t paying attention. She was staring at me, I noticed as I pulled my eyes away from the girl. She looked at me curiously causing the girl to look too. The girl looked me up and down and smiled then nodded her head at me. I nodded back but wasn’t sure why she had done that. “Anyway, about that latter?” “Sorry Ivy, I’ll let you get on with work. See you later.” I waved, taking one last look at the girl then getting out of there fast. I immediately transformed into my wolf form and ran to Trackers. I was scared but I didn’t know why. Onyx didn’t seem scared and actually seemed happy to have seen the wolf. Even though I had wanted to find my family for years, part of me was worried if I did find them. First of all, I would have to leave Ivy. Second of all, I would have to get used to that society again and if what I had learnt about Alphas was true, I would be expected to take over the pack. I didn’t want that. Tracker was outside the cabin working on his bike. He had bought a new seat for it and was changing them out. I expected he would be riding it to the party tonight and I bet he wanted to show off a little bit. “Another werewolf…” I struggled catching my breath as I pulled on some jogging bottoms of Trackers. “What?” He looked genuinely worried. “Where?” “At Franks!” I shouted out. Tracker looked at me confused. “And?” “Wait, two minutes ago you were worried.” He sighed heavily, putting down his screwdriver. “Yeah, because I thought they had come from the east, which would mean they came from… never mind. The point is that its not any werewolves we have to worry about unless…” he stopped and stroked his beard which was getting longer every time I saw him. “She could have been from your original pack. Did she recognise you?” I told him about the fact she walked straight past me until she nodded and also told him about the scent and Onyx howling. “Ok, so maybe he recognised her from when you were younger, after all you did get your wolf incredibly early, or he recognised her scent from when you were younger.” He paused looking at me funny. “Or onyx could have smelt your mate. Youre not 18 yet but there are some cases of wolves finding their mates early.” I looked at him dumbfounded. I began talking to Onyx and I knew Tracker had seen my eyes change colour as he stood waiting patiently. Was she, our mate? I asked, knowing I sounded sad. I wanted Ivy to be our mate. I don’t know, she smelled amazing and familiar. Ok so possibly but not definitely. I sighed out loud. “Onyx wasn’t sure she was our mate, but she smelled familiar. Should I head back and…” I hesitated. “talk to her?” Tracker looked at me very hard and then sighed. “I doubt she will still be there; she was probably passing through but if she knows there’s a wolf here and her wolf gave any indication of recognising you then she will be back. Did she know your name?” I shook my head but then realised. “No, but I said Ivy’s name in front of her. Wil she be, ok?” Tracker smiled sweetly at me, and I glared at him. “Wolves don’t make a habit of telling humans their wolves so she will be more than fine unless she does something to piss one off… but then again she’s been annoying us for years and we’ve not killed her.” I knew Tracker was only joking but I still growled overprotectively. He rolled his eyes. “Lighten up. Anyway, plans are in place for tonight. Your clothes and shoes will be in my new bike seat, Ill obviously leave it unlocked. “Thanks dude. I really do appreciate it.” I smiled and with a lighter heart I waved bye and headed back home to keep Ivy company until this evening.
