Chapter 24 – Meeting Karma Jaspers POV It was the middle of November, and we had a week off school. Ivy had been picking up more shifts at Frank’s, so she had something to do now she wasn’t tutoring me as much. Since her 18th birthday she had gone back to being distant and a little mardy, not as hateful as before but distant. However, she hadn’t changed her attitude towards me as a wolf, so maybe Jesse had gotten through to her, and Tracker had definitely helped that. I had also not seen or heard from Tracker in a few weeks. I had attempted to visit his cabin last week but instead of him being home I had heard a woman’s voice scream “I’m my own Person Tracker” and then Tracker screamed something back. I figured he had issues and left sharpish. Frank had also hired anther girl to help Ivy called Sophie. She wasn’t a girl I knew, and she was over 18. Id never seen her at school in the town or in high school so I think she might have moved here recently. She was friendly enough and didn’t mind me here as a wolf or human. She was friendly and knew her job well. Today was a normal day for Ivy, she came in and baked some things before Sophie finished her shift then took over the front of house service around lunch time. Today wasn’t busy and there were only a few couples in the café. I had curled myself in a nice sunny area by the back door, which Ivy had left open for me whilst Ivy finished baking all the leftover bonfire treats. I could smell toffee and apple, she had also put in a few sausage rolls for me and I had to stop myself from drooling. It was then that I smelt Tracker coming to the shop, but he wasn’t alone, there was a faint smell of berries and wolf with him. I followed Ivy when she went over to them. She was talking to the girl with him. She had chalky grey hair, cool grey-blue eyes and her ski was very pale. She wasn’t too tall, a little shorted than Ivy and seemed very nervous. However, she did smile a lot at Ivy and even at Tracker. You mate? I mind linked Tracker as he was chatting to Ivy. Yeah. He briefly filled me in between conversations. He explains that she’s called Karma, she turned 18 around a week ago, which explains a lot, but that she’s in love with another wolf and reluctant to accept him. He tells me its his old alphas son, Chase, and I know there’s some bad blood with his old pack, so I don’t pry any further. I notice hes extremely on edge and although hes always had a temper, it seemed on the surface a lot more recently. So, his old pack being involved explained a lot. Karma seemed to notice I wasn’t a normal dog, and I could see her looking at me with a perplexed look. When she attempted to stroke me, I had to look at her with a frown. Seriously? I huffed at her. I eventually head back into the kitchen with Ivy who is chattering at me about them making a cute couple. I roll my eyes and head back to my place as she serves them some of the apple treats, she’s been cooking. When she comes back, she puts a sausage roll in front of me and I happily eat it wagging my tail. Being a wolf forever wouldn’t be a bad thing, I chuckled to myself. Onyx doesn’t agree or disagree but seems fairly content. Tracker and Karma chat a lot about school and even about me. Karma asked him so Tracker filled her in, and they seemed to genuinely get along. Ivy at one point, was leaning on the counter, watching them and sighing. I went up to her and nuzzled her hand. She sighed again and reached down to pet my head. I whined. “I’m ok, honestly. They really do make a sweet couple. They seem really close even though Tracker's only known her a few weeks. He was single at my 18th.” She sighed and looked down at me. Her eyes seemed to be wanting to say something, but she didn’t. “Well, Id better take them the bill.” I walked with her, and Ivy began teasing Tracker and Karma over them having a nice date. Karma was visibly taken aback, and I could sense panic in her. She started talking extremely fast and Tracker made a joke about loving Ivy. I was shocked until he started chuckling and I knew he was trying to make Karma jealous. This, however, backfired spectacularly as Karma walked out of the shop, saying her thanks and goodbyes. Tracker seemed annoyed and angry but kept his cool in front of Ivy. Paying the bill and leaving slowly. Ivy chuckled and headed behind the counter to put the money in the till. I headed to the back door and saw Tracker holding Karma against the wall. She seemed terrified and he was angry. Although I didn’t know as much as Tracker about mates, I knew I would never treat Ivy like that. I sighed, thinking about Ivy as my mate both hurt and felt amazing. Eventually Karma and Tracker seemed to soften to each other and talked normally. I smiled inwardly and as Karma got on the back of Trackers bike, she waved at me. I huffed and headed back inside to await Ivy finishing her shift. All that evening she seemed to be in another world. Not quite present when she spoke to her parents or to me. She spent the evening reading a soppy romance novel and texting who I assumed was Jesse. When she did finally fall asleep, I put my nose against her hand, and she absent mindedly stroked my head. I heard her say my name and some garbled words, but I felt the tingles of the mate bond again, but only very slightly. Sighing, I found my place on my usual bean bag and curled up to sleep. Ivys POV Seeing Tracker all cosy with the girl, Karma, made me feel things I never knew I could feel. There wasn’t a jealousy over Karma having Tracker, id never seen him like that. The jealousy was over the fact Tracker had found someone he wanted to be with. I could see the way he looked at her. The way she looked at him when she thought he didn’t notice. Although she seemed extremely shy and cautious around him, it was clear that she liked him a lot. A strong bond, my conscience said, but not always unbreakable. I sighed, wondering where these thoughts suddenly came from. Everyone had a conscience, but was it normal for it to think completely different things to you? I thought a conscience was what you knew was right even when you wanted to break the rules, or memories of things you should and shouldn’t do, guiding you with lessons you’d learned but forgotten. I was leant on the counter, and I knew my sighing was making Jasper worried. I was stroking him to calm him, but he kept whining at me. Once I had finished my shift and got home, there was a sinking in my stomach. The problem was that I really liked Jasper. However, most of it was because I had constantly been comparing him to my wolf. A stupid thing to do, to attribute the characteristics I loved in my wolf to a human. I had been thinking constantly about what Jesse had said at my party and she had to be right. It made way more sense than their being real werewolves and vampires and witches… right? I started dozing off to sleep and pictures of Jasper flitted through my mind. His hair, his eyes, his attitude. And yes, his body. I had never seen him without clothes, he never removed his shirt in football games or outside the locker room so I could only imagine what was under there in my dreams.
