Chapter 28 – Mate?
Japers POV
Ivy and I were having such a wonderful time. It was unreal to think about how much she had been paying attention to what I did at school despite me thinking she hated me until a year ago. Even Onyx was laughing in our head, some of the times she had mentioned were actually his doing, when he fronted after getting mad or trying to protect me. I was laughing at a memory of Tracker when suddenly a smell hit my nostrils. One I had smelled numerous times before and Onyx said a word I hoped he would only say about one person.
Mate! He shouted excitedly in my head. My vision seemed to go black, and I felt like I was falling.
No, Onyx, I love Ivy. I heard him whine as the smell was stronger and stronger the longer, we stood here.
I know Jasper but it is our mate, I recognise the smell. I need to go to her.
No! I said, commandingly and even though I could feel a pull from Onyx, our body didn’t move but I could feel him fighting for control. Suddenly, I felt electricity coursing through my body from my shoulders all the way to my feet. I looked forward into Ivy’s chocolate-coloured eyes.
Mate? Onyx questioned, and I involuntarily sniffed her. I heard him howl in confusion.
“Karma was right…” I whispered.
“What?” Ivy asked, confused, her hands still on my shoulders as jolts of pleasurable electricity shot through me. I pulled her in for a cuddle.
“It’s a long story, but I want to tell you.” I whispered into her hair. I thought she would pull away, but she didn’t. Suddenly, I heard a wolf's howl but this time another followed it. “We need to head back to Franks.” I said, and she did pull away now, looking at me confused.
“What's wrong Jasper?” She asked, furrowing her brows at me, biting her lower lip in worry.
“I’ll explain at Franks.” I began to pull her away as quickly as I could despite Onyx still fighting for control. I grabbed her by the shoulder and made sure she was as close to me as possible. She was looking up at me and I could see confusion and a little fear in her eyes. Before we could leave the woods, I heard a voice from behind me.
“Mate!” I closed my eyes in disbelief. Obviously, the person had transformed to catch up to us so quickly. I just hoped to god she was wearing clothes before we turned around.
Ivys POV
“Mate!” I heard from behind us, but Jasper was holding me against him too tightly for me to turn around. However, he had stopped in his tracks. Did I hear that right?
“I promise to explain everything, Ivy, but first, please go to Franks.” I looked up at him and he looked… scared.
“No, you look terrified. What is it?” I asked, concern showing in my voice as it broke out in a squeak. He looked down at me. His eyes still changing colours.
“I promise, I will explain but I need you safe. Go!” He said, his voice taut, squeezing me to him tighter as if hugging me.
“Absolutely not! If you aren’t safe, then I’m not going anywhere.” I said angrily, trying to pull away from him, but before I could, I heard a chuckle from behind me.
“Let her stay… Maybe your little girlfriend needs to have a little heartbreak so she can back off.” I don’t know why but I saw red and pulled myself away from Jasper and turned around to see a beautiful woman stood there. She had on a long brown dress but no underwear, jacket or shoes that I could see. I looked at her in utter confusion. It wasn’t freezing out here, but it was definitely cold.
“Do you know Jasper?” I asked, knowing I had never seen her before. She wasn’t from our town, and I would have noticed her at school as she was stunning. She had long straight brown hair and her skin was a tanned brown, she also had piercing brown eyes that looked almost like a predator’s eyes. I could also see that she had muscles around her arms and probably her legs too.
“You could say that.” She answered with a smirk on her face. Jasper still hadn’t turned around and seemed rooted in place. Now his arm wasn’t around my shoulders, I could see his fists balled up as if in anger.
“Jasper?” I asked, cautiously.
“Seriously Ivy, go to Franks.” I could hear his voice becoming gravelly and different. Oh, he was defiantly angry, but I didn’t know why.
“How do you know Jasper?” I asked the girl instead. “Who are you?”
“Oh, my name is Sera. I have known Jasper since he was born, but we haven’t seen each other in such a long time.” I figured she must be someone from before he moved here, but as I was about to ask more questions, I saw Jasper turn around and there were tears in his eyes. His eyes had returned to his normal honey colour and there was no longer the brown colour coming through. His hands had also slackened a little even though they were still balled up.
“Please Ivy…” Jasper said, making eye contact with me, and I could see the pleading in them. I nodded at him then turned back to Sera.
“Nice to meet you.” I said, for some reason feeling the need to look at the ground before I turned and walked to Franks as fast as I could. Before I knew it, tears were streaming down my face, and I didn’t know why.
Don’t worry little one. He will be ok. I heard my conscience say to me.
Jaspers POV
When I could hear that Ivy was safely out of the clearing, I turned back to this Sera. She was looking at me with a genuine smile even though before she had been sly and a little dangerous. I could feel her hatred of Ivy and it worried me. I knew she was a werewolf, and I knew who she was.
Our mate. Onyx said before I could finish my thought. I ignored him though. As far as I was concerned, I didn’t want a wolf mate. I wanted Ivy.
“Hello Jasper. Long time, no see.” I knew tears were threatening to spill over. This girl had said she knew who I was which meant only one thing.
“You're from my pack?” I asked, knowing the answer already but needing to hear the confirmation.
“That’s right, sorry I should give a proper introduction. My name is Sara Alveron. Daughter to the Beta of the Blue Iris pack. I greet you Jasper Iris, future Alpha of the Blue Iris pack.” She bowed a little before straightening up and smiling. “Weve been looking for you for over 11 years. I scented my mate a few times in this area, but I didn’t know it was you. Obviously, I knew what you were but not who. However, Sash, my wolf, recognised you straight away.” I knew tears had started running down my face.
“So, you didn’t stop looking for me? My parents?”
“They’re still good and running the pack. They’ve had people looking for you for years. However, the river you fell into splits in hundreds of directions. To be fair, if I hadn’t scented my mate, I would never have looked this way as the river current doesn’t strongly come this way.” She looked concerned. I looked at her with confusion but also a little awe. For some reason, even though we knew she was our mate, it wasn’t affecting us. Was that because of the sadness and elation that had overtaken us over finding our pack.
“OK… This is a lot… Sera?” She nodded.
“You don’t remember me?” She asked, looking a little hurt. I shook my head, I didn’t. “We were friends as kids. I’m a year older than you but my father was often with your father and our mothers were together a lot, so we were naturally thrown together. You used to boss me about because it was always thought I would be your future beta…” She stopped and bit her lip. What wasn’t she saying?
“I don’t remember that or anything much really. I remember falling off a cliff an then waking up here. I don’t even remember my parents' faces.”
“OH!” She said excitedly and took out her phone. “This is your mum, Luna Sienna Iris.” She showed me a picture of a woman with beautifully long blonde hair and beautiful blue eyes. She had a few wrinkles around her eyes but otherwise she looked extremely young. A vision of her giggling whilst tickling me in her arms came to me and I gasped. “This is your father, Alpha Leer Iris.” She showed me my father. He also had blonde hair, but it was a lot darker, and he had dark brown eyes. I had a vision of him being mostly stern and didn’t really remember much else. I shook my head and looked at Sera.
“I think I remember them… Thank you.” I said, meaning it too.
“Don’t thank me, you can do that when we get home.” She walked towards me, offering me her hand. I looked at her like she had sprouted horns.
“Home?” I asked and looked towards the tree line. “This is my home.” Her eyes turned dark and then she smiled again.
“I understand. I will bring home to you then.” Before I could react, she had grabbed my face and kissed my lips. Whilst it felt amazing, and Onyx was howling in my head. Something within me felt disgusted by it, but I didn’t pull away, there was still the mate sparks and a wonderful taste from her, her scent filled my nostrils, and her breathing filled my ears. “See you soon mate.” She smiled before transforming into a medium-sized brown wolf, ripping her dress, and running off into the woods, towards the mountains.
