Drinks and Danger

Midnight Blue was the bar: elegant, unpretentious, with low lighting, dark wood, and mellow jazz. Chen Wei arrived at eight; Xiao Ru already waited in a corner booth. She had changed out of her work attire. She wore a simple black dress, her hair down instead of tied back; she looked different— younger, less guarded. "You are punctual," she said as he slid into the booth. "Bad habit from consulting work. Clients hate waiting." Most people I know arrive late, thinking it makes them important. She called a waitress. "What do you drink?" "Whatever you suggest." She ordered two whiskeys. When they arrived, she raised hers. "To successful contracts and dangerous opportunities." "Dangerous?" "Chen Group eats consultants alive. Fifty percent failure rate on projects. Director Wang has gone through seven in the past year alone." Chen Wei sipped his whiskey. Smooth. Expensive. "You trying to scare me?" Trying to confirm that you understand what you agreed to. Xiao Ru studied him over her glass. "That manufacturing analysis you gave. That was impressive. Most consultants take weeks to reach conclusions you made in minutes." "Experience. After you see the same problems enough times, patterns emerge." "Still. Chen Feng does not give contracts easily. Especially not to unknowns." She paused. "He had you investigated thoroughly. Did you know that?" "I assumed." "And?" "And what?" "Anything I should know? Skeletons in your closet?" Read Intention activated. Chen Wei sensed genuine curiosity mixed with professional caution. She was fishing, but gently. Not aggressive. Just careful. "Everyone has skeletons," Chen Wei said. "Mine are just better buried." Xiao Ru laughed. "Mysterious. I like it." She took another sip. "Want to know something funny? I almost did not introduce you to Chen Feng." "Why not?" Because you gave him the impression that you meant to kill him." Chen Wei went very still. His hand tightened on his glass, and he felt a surge of unease, a chill running up his spine as he considered what Xiao Ru said. Xiao Ru noticed. "I am right, am I not? Something about him bothered you." "I just met him." "Exactly. Most individuals encountering Chen Feng for the first time either worship him or dread him. You looked at him like..." She searched for words. "Like you were calculating weaknesses." Chen Wei forced himself to relax and took a slow drink. "Maybe I was. Clients are targets to analyze. Figuring out what they need, what they fear, what motivates them. That is how consulting works." "Is that all it was?" Xiao Ru met his look with keen, perceptive eyes, but she wasn't entirely convinced. But she didn't push. "Nothing. Just an observation." She changed topics. "So. Wei Chen from Beijing. Tell me something real about yourself. Not the consultant persona. Something true." Chen Wei considered his words carefully. "I grew up poor. Really poor. Learned early that the world does not care about fairness. Only strength matters. Everything else is just pretending." That was true. Just not in the way she would interpret it. A familiar pang of regret twisted in his chest, quickly buried under practiced detachment. "Dark philosophy for someone so young." "Realistic philosophy." "What about family?" "Dead. Just me now." Also technically true. The Chen Wei his family knew was dead. This version was something else. Xiao Ru's expression softened. "I am sorry." "Do not be. Made me who I am." For a while, they sat in comfortable silence. The jazz shifted to a slower, more melancholic style. Then Chen Wei asked softly, "Can I ask you a question?" Xiao Ru nodded, turning to him. "Go ahead." "Go ahead." "Why do you stay at Chen Group? You said yourself the politics are terrible. You are clearly talented enough to work anywhere." Xiao Ru swirled her whiskey. "Stubbornness mostly. I started there right out of university. Thought I could change things from inside. Make the company better. Five years later, still trying." "That is admirable." "That is stupid. My friends tell me I am wasting my time." "Are you?" She looked at him. "I do not know anymore. Sometimes I think I am making a difference. Other times I feel like a hamster on a wheel. Running fast, going nowhere." "What would make you leave?" "Finding something worth leaving for. Or someone." She caught herself, realizing how it sounded. "I mean, a better opportunity. Not someone. That came out wrong." Chen Wei smiled. "I understood what you meant." A faint blush colored her cheeks. She finished her drink quickly. "Another round?" They ordered again. The conversation shifted to safer topics. Donghai City. Business trends. Amusing tales from the workplace followed. Once Xiao Ru calmed down, she was easy to chat with, with a sharp sense of humor and the kind of person who shouted out corporate garbage when they saw it. Chen Wei discovered that he was actually enjoying her company, surprised by the warmth growing within, a sense of comfort he had not expected. Not as a tool or information source. Just as a person. That was dangerous. He could not afford connections right now. Not real ones. A flash of worry crossed his mind, tightening his chest. But Chen Wei felt something change inside of him as he saw her laugh at something he said, her eyes shining with genuine joy. A reminder that five years ago, not everything had changed. Two hours passed quickly. The bar was getting crowded. Xiao Ru checked her phone. "I should go. Early meeting tomorrow." "I will walk you out." The night air was cold. Traffic filled the street. Xiao Ru stood on the sidewalk, uncertain. "Thank you for tonight," she said. "This is not what I typically do. Drinks with colleagues. But you are different." "Different how?" "I do not know yet. Still figuring it out." She met his eyes. "Be careful with this manufacturing project. Director Wang seems reasonable, but he reports directly to Chen Feng. If anything goes wrong, the blame falls on you hard." "I will manage." "I am sure you will." She hesitated, then reached out and squeezed his hand briefly. "See you Monday." She walked away before he could respond. Chen Wei stood there watching her disappear into the crowd. His hand still tingled where she had touched him, leaving behind a bittersweet ache he couldn't easily dismiss. The System chimed. RELATIONSHIP STATUS UPDATED Xiao Ru: Trust level increased Current status: Friendly (40/100) Note: She suspects something about your past but has not identified specifics Recommendation: Maintain a careful distance or commit fully to the relationship Half-measures will lead to exposure. Chen Wei stared at the notification. Forty out of one hundred. Moving faster than he expected. His phone buzzed. Unknown number. Text message. "Wei Chen. We should talk. Tomorrow morning. 7 AM. Riverside Park east entrance. Come alone. - T" No name. But the System immediately flagged it. ALERT: Message source traced Sender: Tang Yong (Underground information broker) Threat assessment: Moderate Recommendation: Attend the meeting with caution Tang Yong. Chen Wei remembered that name from his years on the streets. One of Donghai's major players in the gray market. Information. Connections. Services that existed in legal shadows. Why would someone like that contact him now? Chen Wei deleted the message and headed back to his hotel. His mind raced with possibilities. Had his System activities been noticed? Did Tang Yong know something about his real identity? Sleep came in fragments that night. Chen Wei kept waking, checking his phone, running scenarios. At six-thirty AM, he dressed and headed to Riverside Park. The park was mostly empty at this hour. Early morning joggers. Old people doing tai chi. The east entrance led to a walking path along the river. A man sat on a bench by the water. Muscular, scars on his hands and neck, late forties. Dressed casually, he still looked like someone used to violence. Chen Wei approached cautiously. Used Observe. Target: Tang Yong Age: 46 Occupation: Information Broker, Underground Network Leader Threat Level: HIGH Strength: 8 Combat Ability: 7 Notable: Extensive connections, honorable by underworld standards, values strength and intelligence Dangerous. But not immediately hostile. "Wei Chen," Tang Yong said without turning around. "Or should I call you by your real name?" Chen Wei's blood went cold. Tang Yong finally looked at him. Smiled slightly. "Relax. I am not here to expose you. Sit." Chen Wei sat on the bench, maintaining distance. His muscles coiled, ready to run or fight. "How long have you known?" "Since you attended that networking event. I have eyes everywhere in this city. When someone new appears and immediately catches Chen Feng's attention, I pay attention too." Tang Yong pulled out a cigarette. "Imagine my surprise when facial recognition software suggested you might be Chen Wei. The disgraced heir everyone thought disappeared." "What do you want?" "To offer partnership." Tang Yong lit his cigarette. "Chen Feng and his family destroyed you five years ago. Now you are back with some kind of power. That little fight you had with Scarface and his crew. Three thugs beaten by an injured man who should barely be able to walk. Interesting." So Tang Yong had been watching him from the beginning. "You could expose me right now," Chen Wei said carefully. "Why have this conversation instead?" "Because I hate the Chen family. Always have." Tang Yong exhaled smoke. "Ten years ago, they destroyed my legitimate business. Patent theft. Legal manipulation. Left me with nothing. I rebuilt in the shadows, but I remember." He looked at Chen Wei directly. "The enemy of my enemy is potentially useful." "What are you proposing?" "Information exchange. I tell you things about Chen Group that no consultant would ever learn. Internal politics. Secret deals. Who is loyal to Chen Feng, who secretly hates him. You use that information to get your revenge." "And what do you get?" "When you take down Chen Feng, I want compensation. Financial and otherwise. Nothing excessive. Just acknowledgment that I helped." Tang Yong smiled. "And the satisfaction of watching that arrogant bastard fall." Chen Wei processed this. Tang Yong's offering of an alliance made sense. But trusting him was another matter. Read Intention activated. Chen Wei focused on Tang Yong's demeanor, word choice, and body language. Result: Genuine hatred toward the Chen family Sincere desire for revenge Willing to take significant risks for payback. Personal honor code: once committed, I won't betray "How do I know you will not sell me out the moment it benefits you?" Chen Wei asked. "You do not. That is called risk." Tang Yong crushed his cigarette under his shoe. "But consider this. By keeping my word, I have made it through twenty years in the underworld of Donghai. My currency is my reputation. Betraying you gains me nothing. Helping you destroy Chen Feng gives me something I have wanted for a decade." "You could be working for them. Testing me." "I could be. But I am not. You have to decide whether to trust your instincts." Tang Yong stood. "I will give you one piece of information for free. Proof of good faith. Chen Feng is planning something big. A merger with Henglong Industries. If it succeeds, Chen Group becomes untouchable. Supremacy of the market in three areas. The agreement expires in 45 days. Chen Wei's thoughts were racing. A merger of that size would multiply Chen Group's power exponentially. Taking down Chen Feng would become nearly impossible afterward. "Why tell me this?" "Because you need to move faster than you planned. Whatever strategy you are building, accelerate it. Forty-five days is your window." Tang Yong handed him a business card. Plain white, just a phone number. "Call if you want my help. Or do not. Your choice." He walked away without waiting for a response. Chen Wei sat on the bench alone, staring at the river. The System chimed. CRITICAL INTEL ACQUIRED Henglong Industries' merger was confirmed through multiple sources. Forty-five days. He had barely begun his infiltration when the timeline compressed violently. His phone rang. Xiao Ru. "Morning. Are you free for breakfast? I wanted to go over the manufacturing project details before Monday." Chen Wei looked at Tang Yong's business card in one hand, his phone in the other. Two paths. Two potential allies. Both are dangerous in different ways. "Give me the address," he said. "I will be there in twenty minutes." He pocketed the card and started walking. The game had changed. Forty-five days to stop a merger that would cement his enemy's power. Chen Wei smiled grimly. Let them think they had already won. That would make the fall so much sweeter.
