The doctors stood aside, watching Dylan kneel before the gurney, sobbing his heart out. None of them spoke. Complex emotions roiled in their eyes—regret, pity, and contempt. The lead surgeon slowly shook his head. He knew all too well. He knew the venomous scorn that had come through the receiver when I, hemorrhaging and on the brink of death, dialed that number.
