AAHIL “Get behind me,” I tell Amal, trying trying trying not to break apart in front of her.   She looks at me in confusion, brows knotted into a frown. “What’s wrong? Are you okay?”  I think I’m nodding. I can’t be sure. My eyes are fixed on the door, expecting her to come anytime. I feel my body shudder. There’s—there’s something wrong with my heart. It keeps flailing wildly inside my chest. I tug at my shirt by the collar, wanting to just be able to breathe.   That’s all I ever wanted.  I didn’t want expensive cars or big—lifeless—houses. Didn’t want anything but for my heart to calm down and my lungs to relax and my body—my body to remain untouched.   A sudden cold touch to my forehead has me reeling back.
