Chapter Six: Fix

He reached for my hands and I let him take them and that was the first mistake, the second was that I didn't pull away when he laced our fingers together slowly, like he had all the time in the world and like the room outside that door full of elders and commanders and cooling tea didn't exist anymore. Valek's eyes darkened immediately, a hint of annoyance in them as he stared down at me. His grip on my hands tightened immediately, his gaze narrowing. "Say that again," he demanded, his grasp not relenting even as a soft wince escaped the cages of my lips. I clamped my lips shut, my pride clashing with my sense of self preservation as I stared up at him. I remained quiet. Valek raised a hand, gripping my face firmly as his fingers pressed against the skin of my jaw. He raised a brow, his command wordless but clear. I clicked my tongue, forcing my face out of his hand even as his other hold around my wrist remained. “No.” "Say it again, Fane." His voice had dropped into something I hadn't heard from him before, not the cold command he used on his men, nor the amused, unbothered tone he used on me when he wanted to get under my skin. This was quieter, and it was almost like he was holding something down with the energy that radiated off him. Finally, I relented, forcing the words out of my throat. "I said it's good to know what weakens you," I repeated, chin up, even though my legs were still unsteady and my whole body still hummed like a struck bell. Valek leaned closer to me, his large frame caging me against the wall even more. My breath hitched, whatever else I had to say crawling back down as his eyes bore into mine. “Do you?” he asked lowly, not looking away. “Tell me, what is it?” I nipped at my bottom lip, looking away from him as another wave of heat traveled up my spine. I fought back a shiver, and I could feel my face slowly starting to get flushed. Still, I continued, “you’re just a man at the end of the day,” I huffed, trying to ignore how much my voice trembled. “You see a vulnerable girl and your mouth starts to water.” Valek snorted, not even looking the slightest bit upset at my words. “Really? Is that what this is?” The corners of his lips lifted in a slight smirk, and a dull sense of irritation began to form within me regardless of the growing heat. “Because last I checked, I'm not the one practically humping the air in need.” I froze at the implication in his tone, and I took a moment to pull away from him, pressing my back firmly against the wall in realisation. The more seconds had passed, the more I had been subconsciously inching myself closer and closer to him, my instincts overriding my wants. “That—” I cut myself off, words failing me. “That's not what's happening. It's this stupid heat and it’s all your fault.” “Of course,” Valek replied dryly, his hand sliding up my wrist to caress my arm. “Your heat is to blame for you being absolutely shameless.” My breath hitched at the warmth of his hand as they moved, the skin calloused and firm. His hand moved to my waist, squeezing softly before moving to rest on the small space between my lower back and the curve of my ass. The heat was clouding my mind, reducing the meeting room to just the both of us existing in our own space, and regardless of how much I wanted to spit on his face, at this moment, my body wanted him and nothing else. My lips parted once more, ready to tell him off as I fought my feelings, but Valek beat me to it, silencing me with another kiss. The feeling of his lips against mine was something I doubt I would ever get used to. It started out soft at first, but quickly grew heated as he licked against my bottom lip, clearly asking for access. I granted it to him, angling my head just right as I let his tongue slip inside my mouth. His wet muscle explored freely, moving over my teeth as it intertwined with my tongue. My wolf purred, feeling his hand slip between my thighs. He squeezed the plump flesh, drawing a gasp from me as his hand inched higher. I broke the kiss, forcing down a whimper when his fingers found my soaked panties, pressing the lace underwear against my core as the wetness seeped through the fabric. "You think that's what just happened, Fane?” Valek questioned lowly, applying more pressure before he found my c**t through the cloth. His finger moved in small, almost experimental circles, and I braced my hands against his shoulder, my fingers curling around the material of his suit. “You think I'm giving in just because you're in heat?” I breathed softly, the heat of my words softened by my tone of evident need. "I know what just happened." "You don't,” he replied flatly, his words laced with a terrible kind of certainty. "You think you found a crack in me so you slammed a knife into it before it could close. That's not a weakness, Fane, that’s just you, doing what you always do. This is just you being a slut and blaming your heat." As he spoke, he applied more pressure, and I gasped audibly, my legs trembling a bit. Valek was relentless even as leaned my head forward, burying my face in the crook of his neck. The arousal aside, there was a burning sense of shame in me as well. How much dignity did I really have if I was letting a man I barely knew get me off in public? I had interrupted Valek's meeting, and the better his fingers made me feel, especially because he was doing little to nothing, the more I felt like exactly what he called me — a slut. A slut. Am I really a slut? The thought hit me like a ton of bricks, and I flinched away from Valek's touch, shoving him off me as he drew his hand back. "Don't act like you know me,” I spat. "You held a blade to my father's throat." Valek shrugged, clearly unbothered. "I remember." "You don't get to stand there and psychoanalyze me like you understand what that did to me. You don't get to call me names when it's your fault I feel like this in the first place!" I swallowed hard. My back was still against the wall, cool stone at my spine, and it felt like the only steady thing in the room. "You threatened my family," I continued, because it was the only weapon I had left, and I needed a weapon. "You forced this crown on me. You upended my entire life and expect me to just… adjust, smile and play Luna at your side like none of it happened." "I never expected you to smile." "You expected obedience." "I expected survival," he said sharply, and for the first time real heat came into his voice. "Yours. Do you understand that? I'm putting through this bullshit for you and my f*****g heir.” "That's not an excuse." "I'm not giving you an excuse. I'm giving you the truth, which you asked for.” He exhaled, dragged a hand back through his hair, and for one unguarded second he looked less like the Alpha King and more like a man who hadn't slept properly in weeks. "You think I'm ruthless. Fine, I am. I've had to be but I have never once been ruthless with you without there being a reason bigger than my own comfort behind it." "That's supposed to make me trust you?" "No." His eyes met mine, steady, unflinching. "I don't give a f**k what you do. But right now, you're being emotional because you're in heat.” Valek sighed, raising a hand to my face. “And it's my job as your alpha to fix it.”
