Twenty One GOBSlayer Elbore stood in the corner of the room and watched as Borlan tortured the woman. Again and again he pressed the white-hot bulb to her hand. The wound had blistered badly, and as he pulled the bulb away this last time, the scorched and blackened skin came away with it. Trinn, having admirably concealed her torment, now screamed out a terrible muffled cry through the gag. Elbore winced at the sight, thinking of his wife, so kind and so loving. He thought of his daughter, so beautiful and innocent. Had they endured such torture? Borlan had taken them as insurance that Elbore would remain in his service, assuring him that his family would be returned in due time if Elbore remained loyal and obedient. Now, it seemed clear that Borlan had lied. His family was surely dead.
