CHAPTER 1 :THE NIGHT OF ASHES

1150 Words
The scent of blood clung to the air like a suffocating fog. Aurora crouched low behind a thicket, her heart hammering as the howls of rogue wolves echoed through the once-peaceful Silverfang territory. The moon cast a pale, unforgiving light over the c*****e-broken bodies, trampled ground, and the lingering embers of what had been her pack's home. She didn't dare breathe too loudly, even as her lungs burned from the exertion of running. Every snap of a twig or rustle of leaves sent her nerves alight, her instincts screaming that she was being hunted. And she was. The rogues hadn't stopped after slaughtering her family and friends. They wanted no survivors, no witnesses. She had heard them laughing as they tore through her pack's defenses, calling it a game. Aurora clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms. She wanted to fight back, to make them pay for what they'd done, but she knew she wouldn't stand a chance. Not yet. A deep, guttural growl broke through her thoughts, freezing her in place. "Find her," a voice snarled, rough and filled with malice. "The Alpha wants every last one of them dead." Aurora bit down hard on her lip to stifle a gasp. She couldn't let them find her. She pressed herself further into the shadows, the branches scratching at her skin like claws. The rogue patrol passed dangerously close, their footsteps heavy on the forest floor. Aurora held her breath, counting the seconds, praying they wouldn't notice her. Her mind raced with memories of the m******e-the fire spreading through the packhouse, her brother Elias shouting for her to run, and the cold, lifeless gaze of her mother as she fell to a rogue's claws. Her throat tightened, but she forced herself to stay calm. She couldn't afford to break down now. Minutes felt like hours, but eventually, the patrol moved on. Aurora waited until the forest fell silent again before she dared to move. Her legs shook as she stood, but she ignored the weakness and focused on one thing: surviving. She slipped through the trees like a shadow, her senses sharp and alert. She had no destination, no plan, only the burning need to escape. Every step she took felt like a betrayal-leaving behind her pack, her family, everything she'd ever known. But staying meant death, and she couldn't avenge them if she was dead. The moonlight glinted off something in the distance, drawing her attention. Aurora hesitated, her instincts warning her to stay away, but curiosity got the better of her. She crept closer, her heart pounding as she approached the edge of what had once been her pack's territory. Carved into the ground was a symbol-a jagged, circular mark that seemed to pulse with an unnatural energy. It was burned into the earth, the surrounding grass charred and lifeless. Aurora stared at it, unease prickling at the back of her neck. She didn't recognize the symbol, but it felt important, like a piece of a puzzle she didn't yet understand. Before she could investigate further, a branch snapped behind her. Aurora whirled around, her breath hitching. A rogue wolf stood a few feet away, its yellow eyes gleaming with hunger. "Looks like the little pup wandered too far from home," it sneered, shifting into its human form. Aurora's stomach churned with fear, but she refused to show weakness. She backed away slowly, her mind racing for a way out. The rogue lunged at her without warning, and Aurora barely managed to dodge. She scrambled to her feet and bolted, her heart pounding like a war drum. The rogue's snarls grew louder behind her, its claws tearing through the underbrush as it gave chase. Aurora's legs burned, but she pushed herself harder, her determination outweighing her exhaustion. She couldn't die here-not after everything she'd already endured. The forest thinned ahead, and Aurora spotted a narrow stream cutting through the trees. Without hesitation, she leaped across it, hoping the water would mask her scent. She landed awkwardly, her ankle twisting painfully, but she didn't stop. She could hear the rogue cursing behind her, its voice growing fainter as she put more distance between them. Finally, when her lungs felt like they might give out, Aurora collapsed behind a fallen log. She pressed her back against the rough bark, her chest heaving as she struggled to catch her breath. The rogue's snarls faded into the distance, and Aurora allowed herself a brief moment of relief. She had escaped, but she knew it was only temporary. The rogues wouldn't stop until they found her. .As she sat there, her mind replayed the events of the night in vivid detail. The fire, the screams, the sight of Elias standing defiantly against the attackers, only to be struck down. Guilt and grief threatened to consume her, but she pushed them aside. She couldn't afford to dwell on the past. Not yet. Aurora's gaze drifted back to the symbol she had seen. It felt significant, like a clue to the reason behind the m******e. Her father had always warned her that the world beyond their pack was dangerous, filled with those who would seek to destroy them. But he had never told her why. Now, as the sole survivor of the Silverfang Pack, Aurora was determined to find out. She would uncover the truth, no matter what it took. The sound of approaching footsteps snapped her out of her thoughts. Aurora's heart raced as she pressed herself further into the shadows. She peered over the log, her eyes narrowing as she caught sight of another rogue patrol. "She's close," one of them said, sniffing the air. "The Alpha knows she's alive. He wants her brought to him." Aurora's blood ran cold. They weren't just hunting her-they knew who she was. Her fingers tightened around the small dagger she had managed to grab before fleeing the packhouse. It wasn't much, but it was better than nothing. The patrol moved closer, their voices growing louder. Aurora's heart pounded as she weighed her options. She could try to fight, but she was outnumbered and exhausted. Running seemed like the only choice, but she didn't know if her body could take much more. As the rogues drew nearer, Aurora made her decision. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for what was to come. The time for mourning was over. If she wanted to survive, she would have to fight for it. But as she prepared to make her move, a low, resonant howl echoed through the forest, freezing both Aurora and the patrol in their tracks. It wasn't a rogue howl-it was something else, something powerful. The rogues exchanged uneasy glances before retreating, disappearing into the shadows. Aurora remained hidden, her body tense as the howl faded into silence. She didn't know who-or what-had made that sound, but it had saved her life. For now.
